Yes—if a case fan is plugged directly into a motherboard fan header, that header supplies its power. But a fan connected to a separately powered hub may draw operating power from the power supply unit (PSU), while the motherboard connection handles speed control and, on some hubs, RPM reporting. The exact wiring depends on the motherboard, fan, and hub.

How a direct motherboard connection works

A fan connected to a motherboard system or chassis fan header receives power through that header. The board can also monitor the fan’s RPM and control its speed, subject to the header’s capabilities and settings. Look in your motherboard manual for headers labeled SYS_FAN, CHA_FAN, or a manufacturer-specific equivalent; names and locations vary.

Three-pin and four-pin fans use different control connections. A four-pin fan has a PWM control signal. Depending on the fan and board, speed may be managed through voltage-based DC control or PWM, so check the header settings and fan guidance in the manual rather than assuming a particular mode. GIGABYTE’s Q670M D3H DDR4 manual, for example, identifies ground, voltage speed control, sense, and PWM speed control on its four-pin fan headers: Q670M D3H DDR4 user manual.

How a powered fan hub differs

A powered hub can separate the fan’s operating power from the motherboard’s control connection. In Phanteks’ Enthoo Elite installation instructions, the hub takes 12 V power from a PSU SATA connector and connects to a motherboard fan header with a four-pin cable. The instructions designate Fan 1 as the RPM reference for the hub. This describes that product’s wiring, not a universal rule for every hub.

JBtek All Black Sleeved PWM Fan Splitter Cable 1 to 2 Converter, 2 Pack
  • Length 240mm, pack of two computer fan splitter cables
  • One-to-two PWM fan splitter
  • Beautiful all black sleeved cable
  • Supports 2 PWM fans from a single motherboard PWM header
  • Compatible with 4pin PMW fan connector and 3pin fan connector

When installing a hub, trace both connections: the PSU lead that supplies power and the motherboard lead used for control or monitoring. Follow the hub manual for the required motherboard header, supported fan types, and RPM reporting behavior. See the Phanteks Enthoo Elite PWM hub instructions.

What changes when you use a splitter?

A splitter lets multiple fans share one motherboard header, but it does not provide an independent power source. The fans draw power through the shared header, so check the current rating for that exact header and the fans’ current draw before connecting them. There is no universal safe fan count: ratings and fan demands differ by hardware.

Cable Matters 2-Pack 3 Way 4-Pin PWM Fan Splitter Cable, 12 inches / 30 cm
  • Triple Fan Connection Solution: The 4 pin fan splitter cable connects up to 3 computer case fans to a single motherboard fan header. This PWM splitter cable lets you add an additional fan to improve airflow inside your PC. A fan speed label on the 4 pin master connector of the fan header splitter is wired to receive the PWM control signal and distribute it to all slave fans for synchronized cooling.
  • Unified PWM Control: The 3 way fan splitter (also known as a motherboard fan splitter, CPU fan splitter, or PC fan splitter 4 pin) connects to a 4-pin motherboard header and splits the signal across 3 PWM fans. Control fan speed uniformly through motherboard software for efficient, balanced cooling performance.
  • Synchronized Speed Management: The 4pin fan splitter features one 4-pin connector that sends the RPM signal back to the motherboard to synchronize fan speed across the other two fans. The 3 pin fan splitter omits the RPM signal pin, allowing all connected fans to run in tandem when supported by your system—perfect for setups where you need to daisy chain PC fans for optimized airflow.
  • Spare Cable Convenience Pack: This cost-effective 2-pack of computer fan splitter 4 pin cables includes a spare for future upgrades or extra fans. Each sleeved and wrapped black 12-inch case fan splitter cable provides a clean, professional look inside an open PC case and helps organize your cable management.
  • Wide Compatibility for Enhanced Cooling: Compatible with both 3-pin and 4-pin fans, this PWM fan splitter cable works with popular models such as the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 120mm, Cooler Master MegaFlow 200mm, and other large 230mm case fans. Easily expand your system’s cooling capacity with this reliable PWM fan splitter cable.

ASUS advises connecting a splitter to the primary header and notes that the fans’ speeds synchronize with the RPM of the first fan. MSI likewise shows that supported ratings can vary by header category and motherboard. Consult the instructions for your specific board and splitter: ASUS chassis and fan cable connection guidance and MSI motherboard ports and headers guide.

Check the right connections before powering on

  1. Identify your hardware. Find the exact motherboard, fan, case, and hub models. Use their manuals rather than relying on a wiring diagram for a different product.
  2. Locate the fan header. Check the motherboard manual’s SYS_FAN, CHA_FAN, or equivalent section for the header’s location, current limit, and supported control modes.
  3. Distinguish motor power from lighting. A fan’s RGB or ARGB lead is for lighting, not the fan motor. Confirm connector labels and pin layouts in the relevant manuals before connecting anything.
  4. Trace hub or splitter wiring. For a powered hub, identify both the PSU power input and motherboard control connection. For a splitter, add up the fans’ current draw and compare it with the exact header rating.
  5. Keep CPU cooling separate. CPU_FAN is intended for the CPU cooler fan; case fans typically use system or chassis fan headers. Check the motherboard manual for the right connection.

Header ratings and control options are model-specific. For exact guidance, consult the manual for your motherboard; ASUS also emphasizes this point in its fan connection guidance.
