Peter Thiel has been identified in news reports as the buyer of Casa Encantada, the Bel-Air estate Conrad Hilton reportedly purchased for $225,000 in 1950. The Los Angeles Times reports that it sold for $130 million at a foreclosure auction in Pomona in July 2026. The figures make for a striking comparison, but the earlier amount and the 2026 price are nominal dollars from different eras—not a like-for-like measure of the estate’s value.
What happened to Casa Encantada?
The Los Angeles Times reported on September 30, 2026, that Casa Encantada sold for $130 million at a foreclosure auction in Pomona in July. The paper identified Thiel as the buyer through an LLC; The Guardian’s October 2 account also reported the sale and buyer, attributing the identification to the Wall Street Journal. These are reported transaction details: the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder says its real estate records are not available online, and the deed and auction file have not been independently inspected here.
The sale followed a period of financial pressure tied to the property. The Los Angeles Times says Casa Encantada was collateral for a CIM Group loan and that Winnick’s family relisted it before the auction. Parade reported that entities tied to Gary Winnick defaulted on more than $150 million in loans. Those accounts describe reported circumstances around the foreclosure, not a separately verified accounting of the debt.
How the $225,000 purchase compares with the reported $130 million sale
Parade reports that Conrad Hilton bought the estate in 1950 for $225,000. The Los Angeles Times reports a $130 million auction sale in 2026, 76 years later. The nominal amounts differ dramatically, but a direct comparison leaves out inflation, changes to the property, and the circumstances of each transaction. Parade offers its own inflation-adjusted estimate for Hilton’s price; without a stated method reproduced here, it is better to keep the historical purchase figure in its original dollars.

Casa Encantada’s sales and asking-price timeline
Completed sales and asking prices are different kinds of figures. The timeline below separates reported transactions from listings:
| Year | Reported amount | What it represents | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1950 | $225,000 | Conrad Hilton’s reported purchase price | Parade |
| 1980 | $12.4 million | Reported sale to David Murdock | Los Angeles Times |
| 2000 | $94 million | Reported sale to Gary Winnick; the Times says it set a record at the time | Los Angeles Times |
| 2023 | $250 million | Asking price reported by Parade, not a completed sale | Parade |
| April 2026 | $170 million | Relisting price reported by the Los Angeles Times, not a completed sale | Los Angeles Times |
| July 2026 | $130 million | Reported foreclosure-auction sale price | Los Angeles Times |
Parade describes a $250 million asking price after Winnick’s death, while also referring to a $250 million ask in 2023. The Los Angeles Times gives a separate April 2026 relisting figure of $170 million. The accounts differ in how they place the $250 million listing in the timeline; neither asking price should be mistaken for the eventual auction result.

What is Casa Encantada?
Casa Encantada is a large Bel-Air estate designed by architect James Dolena and built in 1938, according to the Los Angeles Times. The paper describes a property of roughly 40,000 square feet, with seven bedrooms, 20 bathrooms, gardens, a tennis court, and a 60-foot swimming pool. Those features, together with its high-profile owners and reported sale prices, have made the house a notable Los Angeles property.
Conrad Hilton’s connection to the estate
Hilton reportedly lived at Casa Encantada from his 1950 purchase until his death in 1979, and gave the estate its name. Parade quotes Hilton’s autobiography, Be My Guest: “it was a case of love at first sight. From the moment I stood alone in the first floor gallery I knew it was for me, Casa Encantada.” The quotation is attributed to the autobiography by Parade; the book itself was not independently consulted.

Reporting identifies Peter Thiel as the buyer, but describes the purchasing entity as an LLC. The Los Angeles Times says the purchase was through an LLC, and The Guardian says the winning bid came from an LLC linked to him. That is more precise than saying Thiel personally appeared at the auction or that a deed naming him has been verified.
The county’s real estate records guidance says records are not accessible online and can be reviewed in person by appointment. That makes a definitive public-record check unavailable through the county’s online index.
