Mike Flanagan’s Carrie gives Carrie White and her mother, Margaret, a relationship shaped by love as well as harm. In the adaptation, Summer H. Howell plays Carrie and Samantha Sloyan plays Margaret; Sloyan says Flanagan told her, “this isn’t the Margaret White that you recognize. They love each other.” That affection does not erase Margaret’s damaging actions or fundamentalist beliefs.
How this Carrie changes the mother-daughter dynamic
The new adaptation is based on Stephen King’s 1974 novel, Carrie, but its framing of the central relationship emphasizes more than fear and control. In an interview with GamesRadar+, Sloyan recalled Flanagan’s direction: “He’s like, this isn’t the Margaret White that you recognize. They love each other.”

The distinction is not that Margaret’s beliefs or behavior become harmless. The feature describes a bond with greater humanity and dimension, while Margaret’s fundamentalism and actions still cause pain and distance. Mutual love can coexist with a damaging relationship; it is not evidence that the relationship is healthy or safe.

Why Summer H. Howell wanted to play Carrie
Howell told GamesRadar+ that she had not really heard of Carrie before joining the project, despite having worked in horror since childhood. What drew her in was reading Flanagan’s scripts and seeing “the humanity that Mike writes into these characters.” Her comments explain her own route into the role, rather than making a claim that this adaptation is objectively better than earlier versions.

What the eight-episode format adds
Sloyan said the series’ longer format gave her more room to explore Margaret. She also described her real connection with Howell as informing the connection between their characters. That additional space lets the series develop the relationship over time rather than limiting it to the compression of a feature-length story.
The adaptation’s first season has eight episodes. GamesRadar+ reported that all eight would arrive on Prime Video on October 7, 2026. Availability can vary by country and catalog, so viewers should check Prime Video in their region for current access.

GamesRadar+ reported that King praised Flanagan’s version on Threads, writing: “Mike Flanagan’s version of CARRIE is brilliant. What it has to say about social media is shocking and true.” The feature presents this as King’s response; it does not provide a date or link to the original post.
