Carlos Queiroz and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) mutually agreed to end his service agreement as head coach of the Black Stars, Ghana’s senior men’s national team. The departure followed Ghana’s defeats in its first two 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, but the official statement does not say those results were the sole contractual reason.
What the GFA and Queiroz said about his departure
The GFA described the separation as a mutual termination, not a unilateral resignation or a dismissal. Queiroz said the discussions took place in a “spirit of mutual respect” and that both sides considered ending the professional relationship appropriate under the circumstances. Read the GFA departure statement.
In the statement, Queiroz said: “This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else.”

The immediate sporting context was a poor start to qualifying for the 2027 AFCON: Ghana lost to Ivory Coast and The Gambia and had no points from its first two matches, according to the Ghana News Agency.

The 4–2 defeat to The Gambia
Ghana’s latest loss was 4–2 to The Gambia at Accra Sports Stadium. The Black Stars went 2–0 ahead in the first half through Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan, but The Gambia came back to win. Queiroz took responsibility and apologized to supporters in a reaction published by the GFA. Read the GFA match reaction.
“There is not much to say today after the terrible result for us,” Queiroz said. “I, the staff, all the players, we are deeply sad with the result. And we have to say sorry to our fans, to our supporters, for what happened in the stadium.”

The two defeats explain the timing and pressure surrounding the departure, but the GFA’s announcement does not establish that they were the sole cause of the contract ending.
A brief second spell after September retention
The departure came less than a month after Ghana retained Queiroz for a new coaching mandate ahead of the 2027 qualifiers. CAF reported that the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation discussed the arrangement after an earlier short-term mandate expired following the 2026 FIFA World Cup. CAF’s account of the retention and the GFA reappointment announcement establish the short chronology.

Why the results mattered to Ghana
Ghana entered the campaign under added pressure after failing to qualify for the previous AFCON in Morocco, CAF noted. The Ghana News Agency describes the Black Stars as four-time African champions. Those stakes help explain the attention on the opening defeats, but they do not change the official description of how Queiroz’s agreement ended.
