Carlos Baleba gives Manchester United a midfielder whose clearest strengths are winning the ball and carrying it forward. Kobbie Mainoo offers a different, more creativity- and composure-led profile; other squad members are options, but the available evidence does not support a detailed current role-by-role ranking of them. These are complementary profiles, not proof that one player is universally better.
Where Baleba fits in United’s 2026/27 midfield
Manchester United’s 2026/27 Premier League squad list names Baleba, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount, Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Manuel Ugarte as senior midfielders. Mainoo is listed with the Under-21s and remains eligible for Premier League selection. United describes him as a midfielder and says he has become one of Michael Carrick’s first names on the team sheet. United’s squad list and squad-number announcement establish the current roster context.
Baleba joined United from Brighton in August 2026 on a deal through June 2031, with a one-year option, according to his United profile. Brighton’s 25 August 2026 departure announcement records 112 appearances and four goals for the club. His move makes this an emerging comparison: much of the detailed performance evidence below comes from his Brighton seasons, not a synchronized United-season dataset.
Baleba’s strongest evidence: disruption and forward carries
Winning possession
A Premier League analysis published on 23 February 2025 counted 36 interceptions for Baleba in the 2024/25 season, second among Premier League midfielders at that point, despite his having made fewer starts than other leading players. Among midfielders with at least 15 starts in that analysis, he ranked fourth for duels won per 90 (7.05) and ball recoveries per 90 (6.62). Those are historical figures from that season and defined comparison group, not a current United ranking. The Premier League analysis provides the context.

United’s profile adds a later season snapshot: in 2025/26, Baleba played 31 Premier League matches, ranked in the top eight per cent of players for combined tackles and interceptions, and in the top one per cent for second balls won. Those percentiles are the club’s reported rankings for that season. United’s profile also notes that Brighton qualified for the UEFA Conference League.
Carrying the ball forward
Opta Analyst’s 2025 profile describes Baleba as composed when receiving under pressure, strong in possession and willing to turn and drive forward. In its defensive-midfielder comparison group, he averaged 6.3 progressive carries per 90; his 5.2 metres progressed per carry was bettered by only four nominal defensive midfielders in the analysis. This supports a picture of a ball-winner who can move possession into advanced areas himself. Opta Analyst’s profile covers the sample and comparison.

Carrying is not the same as forward passing
The same Opta profile says only 23% of Baleba’s passes in the cited 2024/25 sample were classified as forward, while his progressive passes were long on average. His carrying evidence is therefore stronger than the evidence for high-volume forward passing. A team can benefit from his ability to travel with the ball without treating him as a primary creative passer.

Why the comparison is about combinations, not a fixed ranking
Baleba’s documented profile suggests value when United need midfield ball-winning and a carrier who can advance possession under pressure. Mainoo provides the clearest contrasting evidence: creativity and press resistance. The other listed midfielders broaden the available squad, but the sources do not justify assigning each a detailed current tactical niche or ranking them against Baleba.

Carrick has said selection depends on combinations, the needs of a match, fixture frequency, and availability affected by injuries or suspensions. That makes role fit and partner balance more useful questions than a single best-to-worst ordering. The evidence also comes from different seasons and providers; it is not a controlled, same-season head-to-head comparison.
