Carl Starfelt will miss Sweden’s match against Romania after injuring the back of his thigh against Bosnia and Herzegovina on 2 October 2026. The Swedish Football Association said on 3 October that he was leaving the national-team camp to begin rehabilitation in coordination with Celta Vigo. It has not announced a specific diagnosis or a return date for Celta.
What happened to Carl Starfelt against Bosnia?
Starfelt started for Sweden in the Nations League match, which ended 1-1. The official match record lists him as substituted in the 31st minute. The Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s match record confirms the score and substitution.
SVT reported that Starfelt landed awkwardly after attempting a header, held the back of his thigh and signaled to come off. That is a reported account of the incident, not a confirmed medical explanation of how the injury occurred.
Is Starfelt’s hamstring injury confirmed?
The Swedish Football Association’s 3 October update describes an injury to the back of Starfelt’s thigh. It does not identify a particular muscle or tendon, publish imaging results, or give an injury grade. The federation’s update is the authoritative public description currently available.

RotoWire used the qualified phrase “apparent hamstring” in its early report, but the federation has not confirmed a hamstring-specific diagnosis. Until further information is announced, the most precise wording is an injury to the back of the thigh.
Will Starfelt play against Romania?
No. Sweden said he would miss the Romania match and leave camp. Coach Graham Potter also said after the Bosnia match that Starfelt would be unavailable. AS reported Potter’s comment in Spanish: “No tiene buena pinta y, obviamente, no jugará contra Rumanía. Es un duro golpe.”

How long will Starfelt be out for Celta Vigo?
No return estimate has been announced. Sweden said Starfelt would begin rehabilitation in coordination with Celta, but the federation did not disclose a treatment plan beyond that, a scan result or a timetable. Without those details, a specific absence length cannot be stated reliably.

What to watch for next
The next meaningful update would be a statement from Celta or Sweden identifying the injury more precisely or giving an expected return window. Until one is issued, Starfelt’s absence from Romania is confirmed, while his availability for Celta remains unannounced.
