It could be either, but the available figures do not prove a short squeeze or confirm a durable breakout. Crypto.news reported on October 6, 2026 that ADA had risen about 10% from October 3 to October 5, approached a reported $0.28 resistance area, and saw open interest climb roughly 25% to about $304 million, citing Santiment. That combination is consistent with short covering, but open interest can also rise when traders open new positions—and the cited data does not show whether those positions were bullish or bearish.
Was ADA’s rally really a short squeeze?
Possibly in part, but the evidence cited in the October 6 report cannot establish that a squeeze drove the move. A short squeeze occurs when rising prices pressure short sellers to close positions, with their buying potentially adding to the upward move. To confirm that explanation, traders would need evidence of short positions closing or being liquidated as the price rose. The reported price and open-interest figures alone do not provide that evidence.
Santiment defines open interest as “the total number of outstanding contracts that have not been settled by an offsetting trade.” It can increase when positions are opened and decrease when positions are closed; it does not reveal whether the outstanding exposure is net long or net short. Crypto.news attributed the roughly $304 million total and 25% increase to Santiment, but the specific chart data was not independently inspectable. Treat those as attributed figures, not independently verified measurements.

What the reported $0.28 level does—and does not—mean
Crypto.news described $0.28 as a nearby resistance area. That is the report’s technical framing, not a guaranteed ceiling, confirmed breakout threshold, or established support level. The report also noted that the weekly candle had not closed when it was published on October 6. A move toward a level while the candle is still forming does not by itself confirm that price has broken through it or will remain above it.

For a stronger breakout case, traders would look for price to hold above the area after a close and for subsequent trading to sustain that move. A rejection and retreat could instead leave late buyers exposed to a reversal. Neither outcome is established by the cited snapshots, so they are scenarios to monitor rather than predictions.
Why the open-interest figures do not match
Open-interest totals can differ because providers track different exchanges, instruments, and time windows. The figures below describe distinct markets and moments; they are not competing estimates of one identical market-wide total.

Because the instruments, coverage, and timestamps differ, Kraken’s $5 million should not be compared directly with the roughly $304 million attributed to Santiment as though both measured the same pool of contracts. Nor should CME’s futures settlement be read as a spot-price quote. These are dated snapshots, not timeless levels.

How to read price, open interest, and funding together
Price shows the market’s direction over a chosen interval; open interest shows how many contracts remain outstanding; funding on a perpetual contract gives context about the cost of holding positions on that venue. None of those indicators, viewed alone, identifies the direction of all traders’ exposure. Reading them together can clarify what is happening, but it still cannot guarantee the next move.

- Price rises while open interest rises: new contracts are being added as price moves up. That can include longs, shorts, or both; it does not prove a squeeze or establish that the move is bullish.
- Price rises while open interest falls: positions are being closed overall. This can be consistent with shorts exiting, but the combination alone does not identify which side closed or whether liquidations occurred.
- Funding is slightly negative: Kraken’s October 7 snapshot showed this for its ADA perpetual futures market. It is a venue- and time-specific reading, not proof that the aggregate market was positioned short.
To assess a squeeze explanation, compare price with open-interest changes and funding over the same interval and within clearly identified market coverage. Evidence of short liquidations or short-position closures would be more directly relevant than rising open interest alone. The figures cited here do not provide that directional breakdown.
Does Cardano ecosystem activity explain the move?
The Cardano Foundation’s September 2026 update, published October 6, describes ecosystem activity, but it does not establish that those developments caused the short-term ADA rally. Ecosystem news can provide context; it should not be treated as a demonstrated explanation for a price move without evidence connecting the two.

What can be concluded from the available evidence?
The October 6 reporting supports a limited conclusion: ADA rose toward a reported resistance area while the report’s Santiment-attributed open-interest measure increased. That is compatible with some short covering, but it is also compatible with new positions entering the market. The data cited does not determine the balance or direction of those positions, confirm a short squeeze, or establish whether ADA will hold above resistance or reverse.
