Credit-card radios took several forms: tiny receive-only sets such as Casio’s RD-10, Sony-branded pocket receivers, and even credit-card-sized amateur handhelds. The Casio RD-10 is the clearest example of the format’s miniaturization: Hackaday reported it at 1.9 mm thick in a 2025 retrospective. Its unusual earbud was more than an accessory—it served as the antenna and power switch as well as the listening device.
What made the Casio RD-10 a card radio?
The Casio RD-10 was an FM receiver designed around an exceptionally flat, credit-card-like body. Hackaday reported a thickness of 1.9 mm in its March 22, 2025 retrospective, a figure for this model rather than a specification shared by every Casio card radio. Hackaday’s account of the RD-10 and Casio variants is a retrospective, not a manufacturer specification sheet.
The set used a coin cell and a special flat headphone connector. In Hackaday’s description, the earbud performed three roles: it carried the sound, acted as the FM antenna, and switched the radio on. That design made the original earbud and connector integral to operation. A missing earbud could mean more than having to find a comfortable replacement; it could leave the radio without its intended antenna or switching arrangement.
How did Casio vary the card-radio idea?
Casio’s lineup extended beyond the thin FM receiver. The variants described by Hackaday differed in reception, added functions, and power arrangements; the retrospective does not assign model numbers to these versions.

The stereo example’s battery condition is a warning about an aging battery in that particular radio, not evidence that every stereo model has the same failure. For any vintage unit, battery type and present condition are part of the practical appeal and the risk.
Which Sony card radios appear in collector accounts?
A 2018 post on The SWLing Post discusses two Sony examples: the Sony FM RADIO SRF-201 and the SW One-Station Radio Clip T2. The post’s author relayed uncertainty about the Clip T2’s identity and promotional branding. In the comments, readers recalled that it was sold only in Japan and described it as a three-position, three-frequency radio. Those are reader recollections, not manufacturer documentation. One comment gives the Clip T2 frequencies as 3.945, 6.115, and 9.760 MHz and associates them with Radio Nikkei 2. Treat these details as an attributed comment rather than a verified specification. The page also includes a reader wondering whether a T1 existed; it does not establish that such a model did.
What about Alinco’s credit-card handheld radios?
Alinco’s late-1990s DJ-C1, DJ-C4, and DJ-C5 belong in the wider story of credit-card-sized radios, but they are not the same category as the Casio FM receiver. They are amateur handheld transmit/receive radios: two-way communications equipment rather than receive-only listening sets.

A contributor account on The SWLing Post says the DJ-C1 covered two meters, the DJ-C4 covered 440, and the dual-band DJ-C5 could also receive the aircraft band. The same account describes the C1 and C4 as earpiece-only, while the C5 included a small speaker. These radios are old collectibles, and the available accounts do not provide controlled performance comparisons, sensitivity measurements, or present-day reliability data. A listing photo or a model name alone cannot establish that a set is complete or works. Check the features that matter to the particular radio:

- Identify the category and model. Confirm whether it is a receive-only radio such as the Casio or Sony examples, or an Alinco two-way handheld. Their purposes and capabilities differ.
- Look for model-specific accessories. For the RD-10, ask whether the unusual flat earbud and connector are present, since the earbud served as antenna and power switch as well as headphones.
- Ask about batteries and operation. Find out whether the battery is present, whether it holds charge where applicable, and whether the radio has been tested. An old rechargeable battery may need attention; the reported weak battery applies to the stereo example shown by Hackaday, not to every unit.
- Check completeness and condition. Inspect the body, controls, connectors, and included accessories. Seek a clear demonstration of operation rather than assuming a vintage radio works because it looks intact.
- For a Clip T2, distinguish recollection from verification. The Japan-only sales claim and frequency details come from reader comments on The SWLing Post, not manufacturer documentation.
Current availability and condition vary by individual listing; the cited accounts do not establish marketplace stock. A search for a specific model such as the Casio RD-10 is more useful than assuming all credit-card radios share parts, tuning, or accessories.
