Recent evidence points to four developments in car camping: more vehicle-integrated sleeping and shelter options, more gear for extending time at camp, reported growth in sales of selected vehicle-supported products, and rising participation in a broader vehicle-accessible camping category. These are documented trends, not proof that every camper’s setup has changed.
What counts as car camping?
The National Park Service calls camping at an established campground that visitors drive to “frontcountry camping,” commonly referred to as car camping. Campground facilities vary, so the term does not guarantee a particular set of amenities or that a vehicle is used as sleeping space. The National Park Service’s frontcountry camping guidance describes this campground-based form.
Other figures use broader or different categories. REI discusses “vehicle-supported” products and adventures, while the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) counts people who camped close to their vehicles. Neither category is identical to all frontcountry camping, rooftop-tent camping, or sleeping in a car.

1. More ways to sleep and shelter with the vehicle
REI’s July 2022 examples show several ways to build a vehicle into a campsite: a ground-level vehicle sleeping platform, a rooftop tent, a car shelter, or racks used to support equipment. A ground tent at the campsite remains another option; the point is that vehicle-supported setups can place sleeping or shelter space in different locations.

These examples come from one retailer’s assortment, not a survey of what campers use or a comparison of how well each setup performs. A vehicle sleeping platform must fit the vehicle, and the sources do not establish that one arrangement is more comfortable or practical than another. REI’s July 11, 2022 report describes the products and related examples.
2. A broader set of add-ons for time at camp
REI’s examples also include coolers, sleeping bags, chairs, and cookware alongside vehicle-specific products. These items can support a more self-contained trip, but they are choices rather than requirements for car camping. A campground-based trip may need little beyond suitable sleeping gear, while someone planning to spend more time away from services may choose to bring additional supplies.

REI senior merchandising manager for camp Melissa Paul described the retailer’s customer trend this way: “This camper is a bit more spontaneous, is interested in being more self-sustained, and goes out a bit further off the grid to camp.” That is Paul’s description in REI’s July 11, 2022 release, not a finding about all campers.

In July 2022, REI said its sales of vehicle-supported camp items—including car shelters, refrigerators, and rooftop tents—had risen 45% since 2019. This is a retailer-reported change for those product categories at REI. It is not a measure of total camping activity, sales across the outdoor industry, or the share of campers using vehicle-specific gear. The figure and its scope are described in REI’s report.

4. OIA reports more people camping close to vehicles
The Outdoor Industry Association’s 2026 Camping Report executive summary says 42.3 million Americans camped close to their vehicles in 2025. OIA also reports more than 2 million additional campers in one year and 6.2 million more since 2020. These are participation figures for OIA’s “close to their vehicles” category; they do not say how many people slept in cars, used rooftop tents, or camped at NPS frontcountry sites. The title’s original comparison point is incomplete, so the available evidence cannot establish four changes from a particular year, event, or earlier version of car camping. It does support a more careful conclusion: recent reporting documents a wider set of vehicle-supported gear options, a retailer-specific increase in sales of selected products since 2019, and growth in OIA’s broader measure of camping close to vehicles. Those measures describe different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.
