Capitec’s latest interim results show that Fintech and Insurance together accounted for 56% of group headline earnings, while net non-interest income reached 70% of income from operations after credit impairments. The figures point to a larger role for businesses beyond traditional banking—but they are Capitec’s own segment allocations, not proof that those businesses can grow independently of its banking platform.

How much of Capitec’s growth comes from beyond traditional banking?

For the six months ended 31 August 2026, Capitec reported headline earnings of R9.5 billion, up 19% year on year. Net non-interest income rose 21% year on year to R16.1 billion and made up 70% of income from operations after credit impairments, compared with 65% in the same period a year earlier. These are company-reported figures in Capitec’s 30 September 2026 interim-results announcement.

Capitec allocated 29% of group headline earnings to Fintech and 27% to Insurance for the interim period. Personal Banking contributed 37% and Business Banking 6%. That puts the combined Fintech and Insurance allocation at 56% for this half-year period.

For context, Capitec’s annual-results announcement allocated 26% of FY2026 headline earnings to Fintech and 27% to Insurance, or 53% combined. That audited full-year period ended 28 February 2026 and should not be treated as directly equivalent to the six-month interim split. The percentages are the company’s segment allocations, and the FY2026 figures total 99%, apparently because of rounding; they should not be adjusted. Capitec reported full-year headline earnings of R16.848 billion, up 23%, on its FY2026 results page and in its annual-results announcement.

What Capitec counts as Fintech

Capitec describes its Fintech businesses as Value-Added Services (VAS) and Capitec Connect. They add everyday purchases and mobile connectivity to the group’s offering, but their growth figures measure different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Value-Added Services

VAS covers services such as prepaid airtime and data, electricity, vouchers and bill payments. Capitec reported VAS income of R3.5 billion for the six months ended 31 August 2026, up 30% year on year.

What is behind Insurance’s contribution?

Insurance headline earnings rose 22% year on year to R2.5 billion for the six months ended 31 August 2026. The net insurance result increased 28% to R3.0 billion. Capitec attributed the performance to Credit Life and Funeral Cover.

The company reported 2.2 million active Credit Life policies and 3.8 million active funeral policies, covering more than 17 million lives. These are Capitec’s reported policy and lives-covered counts; they describe the scale of its insurance book, not a measure of earnings on their own.

What the numbers do—and do not—show

The interim results provide two indicators of diversification: the share of headline earnings allocated to Fintech and Insurance, and the share of income from operations after credit impairments represented by net non-interest income. The latter was 70% in the interim period; Capitec’s annual-results announcement reported 67% for the full year ended 28 February 2026. The periods differ, so these figures show the reported mix in each period rather than a like-for-like forecast.

Neither measure establishes that Fintech and Insurance are independent of the bank’s customer base, infrastructure or distribution, or that their current growth rates will persist. The results show that Capitec’s reported earnings mix is extending beyond Personal and Business Banking, while leaving the durability and degree of independence of that growth as separate questions.

Capitec described its strategy in the interim announcement: “Our results show the power of the diversified business we have built over decades on strong fundamentals of simplicity, affordability, accessibility and a personalised experience.” The announcement attributes this statement to Capitec, without naming an individual speaker.
