Capcom grew from an Osaka business making arcade machines into a global game company by carrying arcade-era technical know-how into home games, building franchises that lasted across generations, and earning value from its catalog and intellectual property beyond a single release. Its history began in 1979, before Capcom Co., Ltd. was established in 1983.
Capcom began with arcade machines in Osaka
Capcom’s corporate history traces its roots to I.R.M. Corporation, established in May 1979 in Matsubara, Osaka, to develop and sell electric applied game machines. Capcom Co., Ltd. was established in Osaka in 1983. The distinction matters: the company’s origins predate the Capcom name and its formal establishment.
Capcom says its early ambition was global, and it built its identity around high-spec arcade games and its proprietary CP System circuit board. That focus meant developing both the games players saw and the technical capability to deliver them in arcades. Capcom later described its move into home video games as an extension of expertise developed in arcade production, rather than a complete break from its beginnings. Capcom’s corporate history and its 2025 Integrated Report set out this company-reported history.
Franchises turned arcade experience into lasting game worlds
Street Fighter made competitive play a core property
Street Fighter II became a major arcade hit in 1991. Capcom credits the game with helping establish the fighting-game genre. The series’ arcade origins gave it a format built around direct competition, recognizable characters, and repeat play. Capcom later used Street Fighter as an early example of extending game content into film and animation.

Resident Evil expanded Capcom’s reach in 1996
Resident Evil debuted in 1996 as a survival-horror series. Its longer history illustrates how Capcom’s business came to depend on durable properties, not only on arcade hits or one-time launches. In its 2025 Integrated Report, Capcom reported 170 million cumulative units sold for the series; that is a company-reported total, not an independently verified current count.
Monster Hunter built a cooperative identity
Launched in 2004, Monster Hunter developed around cooperative hunting. Capcom reported 120 million cumulative units sold for the series in its 2025 Integrated Report. The company also reported that Monster Hunter Wilds, released in February 2025, sold 10 million units in its first month—a record for Capcom, according to the company. These figures describe different measures: one is a franchise total, while the other is a single title’s first-month sales.

Capcom extended each release’s value beyond launch
In 1994, Capcom established what it calls its “Single Content Multiple Usage” strategy, initially using Street Fighter in film and animation. The broader idea is to put game properties to use in other forms of entertainment and experiences, rather than treating a game release as the only way to reach an audience. Capcom’s later film and animation projects continued that approach.

Capcom describes digital catalog sales as a way for older games to remain available and generate sales over time. That model combines new releases with continued activity from a back catalog, while licensing and other uses of familiar characters and worlds can extend a property beyond games. Capcom explains these approaches in its 2025 Integrated Report.

What Capcom does today
Capcom describes itself as a game software developer based in Osaka. Its listed business includes planning, developing, manufacturing, selling, and distributing home, mobile, and arcade games, as well as operating amusement arcades. Its present-day business therefore spans more than console releases, even though its globally recognized franchises are central to its strategy. See the company’s corporate profile.
Capcom’s 2025 strategy discussion says it concentrates on Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter, while also developing sequels, remakes, new intellectual property, and ports for current hardware. The company says it consistently releases two to three major new titles per year and identifies expanding its development pipeline as a future need. This is Capcom’s description of its strategy and operating cadence, not a guarantee of future release frequency.

Esports and licensing bring franchises to audiences outside the games
Capcom also uses esports, licensing, exhibitions, and location-based or partner-developed experiences to expand awareness and use of its properties. The company reported that its March 2025 Capcom Cup 11 and Street Fighter League World Championship event in Japan drew 14,000 in-person attendees and more than 10 million online views. Capcom also said its Pro Tour has been held in up to 160 countries and regions. These are company-reported event and reach figures, not independent audience measurements. The COO discusses these efforts in Capcom’s 2025 Integrated Report.

Capcom’s growth goals are targets, not results
Capcom’s 2025 strategy sets goals of at least 10% annual operating-profit growth and annual software sales of 100 million units. The company presents these as targets; they should not be read as achieved results or as guaranteed outcomes. Its stated growth approach combines major releases, continued development of core franchises, new projects and ports, catalog sales, and wider uses of its intellectual property. Capcom’s 2025 Integrated Report describes the goals and the strategy behind them.
