Vancouver and Edmonton delivered two high-scoring games to open the 2026–27 NHL season, but they split the home-and-home: the Canucks won 6–5 in overtime on September 29, and the Oilers took the October 1 Vancouver home opener 9–7. Edmonton’s Connor McDavid had five points in the second game.
How the Canucks–Oilers opening-night set unfolded
The teams met first at Rogers Place in Edmonton on September 29, then at Rogers Arena in Vancouver on October 1. Both games started at 7:00 p.m. local time, according to the Canucks’ 2026–27 schedule announcement.
| Date and venue | Result | Defining detail |
|---|---|---|
| September 29, Rogers Place, Edmonton | Vancouver 6, Edmonton 5 (OT) | Paul Cotter scored Vancouver’s first goal and the overtime winner. |
| October 1, Rogers Arena, Vancouver | Edmonton 9, Vancouver 7 | Connor McDavid had one goal and four assists; Leon Draisaitl had two goals and one assist. |
The first result gave Vancouver the opener; the second gave Edmonton the home opener and split the set 1–1. The NHL described the matchup as the clubs’ eighth mutual season-opening game in its 2026–27 season overview.

What happened in the 6–5 overtime opener?
Vancouver won in Edmonton on September 29 after a game in which the Canucks scored five goals in regulation and Cotter finished the job in overtime. The Canucks’ official recap recorded the 6–5 final and Cotter’s two key goals. It was also Manny Malhotra’s first NHL win as a head coach.

After the game, Malhotra praised his team’s resilience while acknowledging a problem to address: Vancouver had conceded three goals in the third period. That combination—late vulnerability and a comeback that still ended in a win—set the tone for the rematch without guaranteeing another Vancouver victory.
How did Edmonton win the Vancouver home opener?
The Canucks’ October 1 home opener was even more goal-heavy, but Edmonton prevailed 9–7 at Rogers Arena. The Oilers and NHL recap reports that Edmonton built a substantial lead before Vancouver narrowed the margin late. The comeback made the finish tighter; it did not change the winner.

McDavid led the scoring with five points (one goal and four assists), while Draisaitl contributed three (two goals and one assist). Reflecting on the first two periods, McDavid said, “Obviously we understand the game has got to look a little bit different, but I thought, the first 40 (minutes) is what it could look like a lot of the time, and what it should look like a lot of the time.” That was his assessment of this game’s opening 40 minutes, not a promise about future meetings.
What did “repeat opening night” mean for the home opener?
For Vancouver, October 1 was a homecoming event as well as the second game of the set. The Canucks announced the game as their home opener, presented by RBC, and described planned pregame activities at Live at RBC Landing, beginning at 5:00 p.m. The announcement listed live music, interactive games, alumni autograph sessions, Canucks Dance Team performances, face painting, colouring stations, and a retail trailer, followed by introductions of the 2026–27 roster and coaching staff and a new opening video.

Its release mentioned an RBC cardholder concession cash-back offer and an estimated 50/50 jackpot as event-specific promotions. These were pregame announcements for October 1, 2026, not offers available for future games. Details are in the Canucks’ home-opener announcement.
Where could fans watch or listen?
The NHL’s season overview listed Canucks at Oilers as part of the September 29 Sportsnet doubleheader in Canada. That league-level listing does not establish carriage or streaming availability in every location. For the October 1 game, the Canucks’ game notes listed Sportsnet Pacific and Sportsnet One on television and KiSS West Coast on radio. Those were listings for that specific game; check current local listings for a later matchup.
