Boston University opened its 2026-27 men’s hockey season with a 2-1 overtime win over Alaska on October 2, 2026, in Fairbanks. Vancouver prospect Caleb Malhotra made his collegiate debut, recording two shots and two penalty minutes but no point. His third-period pass helped create a chance for captain Jack Harvey; Alaska goalie Tyler Shea stopped Harvey’s attempt.
What Malhotra did in his first college game
The freshman centre did not score or register an assist, according to the official box score. Boston University’s recap describes a notable third-period play: Malhotra passed to Jack Harvey, whose attempt was stopped by Alaska goaltender Tyler Shea.

How Boston University beat Alaska
BU won 2-1 in overtime. Tynan Lawrence scored the game-winner at 1:18 of overtime, assisted by Harvey and Carter Amico. The College Hockey, Inc. box score records that timing. BU’s recap contains a conflicting opening sentence saying Lawrence scored with 3:42 left in regulation, but its period table and play-by-play summary also place the goal in overtime.

Jack Murtagh scored BU’s first-period goal, assisted by Lawrence. Alaska’s Linden Burrett scored a first-period power-play goal. BU outshot Alaska 43-26; Alaska went 1-for-4 on the power play, while BU went 0-for-3, according to the BU recap and box score.
Why Vancouver Canucks fans are watching
Vancouver selected Malhotra third overall in the 2026 NHL Draft. Before choosing BU for the 2026-27 season, he played for the OHL’s Brantford Bulldogs. In a June 27, 2026 feature, Malhotra cited the program’s pedigree and the success of players who had come through it when discussing his decision. The Canucks feature identifies him as a centre and reports that the coaching staff was a key factor in his choice. Vancouver’s draft release confirms his selection position.

Malhotra’s debut gives Canucks fans an early game snapshot: a chance-creating pass, two shots, and no point in a close win. There was no direct postgame comment from him about the debut in the cited game recap or box score.
