If you can’t see or change a file extension on an iPhone or iPad, open the file’s folder in Files, tap the folder’s More menu, choose View Options, and turn on Show All Filename Extensions. Then touch and hold the file, tap Rename, and edit the name. Changing a suffix such as .mkv to .mp4 only changes the filename; it does not convert the file’s contents.
Show the extension in the Files app

Open Files and navigate to the folder containing the file.

Open the folder’s More menu and tap View Options. The menu icon can look different on iPhone and iPad.

Turn on Show All Filename Extensions. The suffix, such as
.pdfor.jpg, should appear at the end of the filename. Check the folder you are working in; reporting on the setting has described its scope differently across versions.#1 Best Overall

If you only need to identify the file type, touch and hold the file and tap Get Info. This shows its extension or file type without renaming it.
Rename the file

Touch and hold the file in Files, then tap Rename.

Edit the filename. To change the extension, carefully edit the characters after the final period. Keep an unchanged copy first if the file is important.

Confirm the new name. Renaming changes the filename, not the data or format inside the file.

Rename a file or convert its format?
| What you want to do | Use | What happens |

| Create a file in another format | Export or a format-aware app | Creates a copy in another format when that format is supported. |
For a supported document, open it in Files, tap its title, and choose Export to save a copy in a different format. Apple cautions that “Not all document formats are supported by the Files app.” See Convert files to different formats on iPhone. If the item is a video, image, or another unsupported file, use an app that can actually convert that format rather than simply changing its extension.
If View Options or Rename is missing
Check the selected item and location
Available actions can depend on the selected item and where it is stored. Try opening the folder first and selecting the file itself. Apple’s Files guide notes that options can vary by item: Rename, move, or copy files and folders on iPhone.

Enable the cloud provider in Files
If the file is in a third-party cloud service, confirm its app is installed and its Files location is enabled. In Files, go to Browse > More > Edit, then enable the provider if it is listed. Apple names Google Drive, Box, Dropbox, and Microsoft OneDrive as examples; if the location is absent, check with the provider. See Use third-party cloud apps in the Files app.

What Shortcuts can—and can’t—do here
Shortcuts can help with related file-handling workflows using actions such as Save File and Open In, but you do not need a shortcut to reveal or rename an extension. For the basic fix, use Files’ View Options and Rename commands.
