Ubuntu Pro for Devices is Canonical’s paid support subscription for IoT deployments. It combines extended security maintenance for Ubuntu and a wide open-source software stack with Landscape fleet administration, compliance-oriented modules and hardening profiles, and optional Real-time Ubuntu. Canonical announced the offer on 9 April 2024 as a 10-year service; its current IoT materials describe up to 15 years in some product and release contexts. The applicable term, covered device and compliance features must be confirmed for the exact Ubuntu release and subscription.
What Canonical announced in April 2024
Canonical introduced Ubuntu Pro for Devices in Nuremberg on 9 April 2024 for organizations deploying Ubuntu-based connected products. The launch announcement promised 10 years of security maintenance for Ubuntu and thousands of open-source packages, including Python, Docker, OpenJDK, OpenCV, MQTT, OpenSSL, Go and ROS. It also highlighted Landscape for fleet operations and access to Real-time Ubuntu for latency-sensitive workloads. Canonical’s launch announcement is the dated source for those claims.
The offer was presented as available directly from Canonical and through an ODM ecosystem that included ADLINK, AAEON, Advantech and DFI. Canonical also referenced Ubuntu Certified Hardware, but the announcement does not establish that every model from those companies, or every custom configuration, is covered.

| 9 April 2024 launch | 10 years of security maintenance for Ubuntu Pro for Devices | The original launch commitment; see Canonical’s announcement. |
| Current IoT and devices page, accessed 27 September 2026 | Expanded security maintenance of up to 15 years with Ubuntu Pro for Devices | “Up to” is not a universal term for every image, release or device. Check the offer and subscription terms at purchase: Canonical IoT and devices. |
| Ubuntu Core 26 announcement, 19 May 2026 | Up to 15 years for Ubuntu Core 26 | This is a release-specific statement, not proof that every Ubuntu Pro subscription receives 15 years: Canonical’s Ubuntu Core 26 announcement. |
Canonical’s legal description, dated 26 June 2026, defines Ubuntu Pro as an addition to Ubuntu LTS that supplies security updates and packages intended to meet requirements such as FIPS or FedRAMP. It describes device subscriptions as applying to physical devices used for device use cases, including hardware certified or enabled by Canonical. Confirm the applicable subscription, architecture, image and hardware coverage in the contract rather than assuming that any Ubuntu installation qualifies. Read the Ubuntu Pro Description.
What the subscription does for an IoT fleet
Maintains the operating system and common dependencies
The value is broader than patching the base operating system. Canonical positions the service as maintenance for Ubuntu plus commonly used applications and dependencies, so teams can address vulnerabilities in components such as OpenSSL, Python, Docker, OpenJDK, OpenCV, MQTT, Go and ROS without independently sustaining every upstream branch.
The 2024 launch page says Canonical patches “over 1,000 CVEs each year.” That figure is not tied to a year in the announcement, so it should not be used as a current annual performance metric. It is safer to evaluate the support policy, affected packages and response commitments for the release you intend to ship.

Operates devices through Landscape
Landscape is Canonical’s administration layer for Ubuntu estates. The launch description covers adding devices, controlling software versions and configuration, monitoring performance and compliance, and applying actions to groups from a portal. The current product page also says device management can be integrated with a platform of your choice. That matters if your organization already uses an IoT platform, endpoint-management system or security operations workflow.
Supports latency-sensitive workloads with Real-time Ubuntu
Real-time Ubuntu is offered for use cases where predictable scheduling and low latency are requirements. It is an option within the portfolio, not a guarantee that an application will meet a particular response-time target; hardware, kernel configuration and workload behavior still need engineering validation.
Provides compliance-oriented modules and hardening
Canonical says Ubuntu Pro for Devices includes certified modules and hardening profiles intended to help organizations work toward standards such as FIPS, HIPAA and PCI-DSS. These capabilities can reduce the amount of evidence gathering and configuration work, but a subscription alone does not make a device, product or company compliant. Scope, operating procedures, software configuration, access controls, vulnerability handling and the auditor’s requirements remain part of the assessment.

What Ubuntu Pro for Devices does not establish
- It is not a blanket certification. FIPS, HIPAA and PCI-DSS involve specific scopes and controls; selecting a Pro subscription does not certify your complete deployment.
- It is not automatic coverage for every board. Canonical named ODM partners and certified hardware, but the cited announcements do not identify a particular Amazon-searchable model or prove compatibility for a custom design.
- It is not a fixed 15-year promise for every Ubuntu image. The 15-year language is “up to” on the current IoT page and is explicit for Ubuntu Core 26 in its release announcement.
- It is not a performance benchmark. The available material contains no independent test comparing boot time, latency, throughput or power use.
- It is not a stated price list. Pricing and commercial terms depend on the deployment and are not provided in the cited sources.
How to decide whether it fits your product
1. Define the deployment model
Decide whether your product needs classic Ubuntu LTS with a conventional package and service model, or Ubuntu Core with a more appliance-oriented, transactional image and snap-based approach. The choice affects image construction, update behavior, recovery design and the support term you must verify.
2. Set the maintenance horizon
Write down the field-life requirement for the hardware and the date of your first shipment. Then ask Canonical to state the security-maintenance period for the exact release, architecture and subscription. Use the 2024 10-year announcement and newer “up to 15 years” language as dated context, not as a substitute for the release-specific term.
3. List the packages that create your risk
Inventory the operating system, language runtimes, containers, computer-vision libraries, middleware and protocols actually shipped. Confirm which versions are covered and how fixes are delivered when an upstream component reaches end of life.
