On the PIXMA G7020, Canon labels error 5200 “Printer error has occurred.” Its manual does not define the code as simply low ink. Canon’s prescribed order is to check and refill ink if needed, power-cycle the printer, then run Replace Ink in Print Head. If 5200 returns after that, print-head replacement may resolve it; if the error returns again after replacement, contact a Canon service center.
What Canon error 5200 means
Canon’s G7000 series Online Manual gives the diagnostic line “Printer error has occurred.” It asks users to check ink as the first troubleshooting step, but does not say that an empty tank is the sole cause of 5200.
Canon documents a similar recovery sequence for the G2070 family in its G2070 series manual. That is corroboration for Canon’s approach in another ink-tank family, not a claim that instructions for every Canon printer model are interchangeable. For another model, use its own manual.

Canon warns that skipping steps or changing their order may cause other problems. For the G7020, follow this sequence:

- Check the remaining ink. Refill any tank that needs ink.
- Turn the printer off and unplug it.
- Reconnect power and turn the printer on.
- Run Replace Ink in Print Head. Use this named maintenance operation in the printer’s instructions; do not substitute a different cleaning option and assume it is the same procedure.
If 5200 returns after these steps, Canon says replacing the print heads may resolve the error. If it recurs after print-head replacement, Canon directs the owner to request repair from a Canon service center.
How ink flushes and cleaning reports fit in
Canon Community discussions include individual G7020 reports of 5200 during cleaning or deep cleaning. In one case, a Canon Community product expert recommended an ink flush; another discussion advised making sure all tanks were more than half full before an ink flush. Those are case-specific forum experiences and suggestions, not the G7000 manual’s stated 5200 procedure.

Keep the terms distinct: cleaning, deep cleaning, ink flush, and Replace Ink in Print Head are not interchangeable names for one operation. An ink flush may be suggested in a particular case, but the manual’s ordered sequence remains the official starting point for a G7020 error 5200.
When to consider a replacement or service
Print-head replacement is a later-stage possibility in Canon’s instructions, not the first step and not a guaranteed fix. If considering a replacement print head for a G7020, confirm the exact model compatibility and part with Canon documentation or the seller; the cited Canon instructions do not identify a part number or current stock.
