If a computer does not recognize your Canon PowerShot, first check the exact camera model and its connection instructions. PowerShot cable, software, and setup requirements vary. If a model-appropriate USB connection still fails, transfer the photos using a compatible memory-card reader or computer card slot instead.
1. Check the exact model, cable, and connection
Find the full model name on the camera or in its documentation, then open the manual and support page for that model. Confirm which interface cable it requires, where the camera-side connector goes, and how the camera should be powered or set for transfer. Do not assume that a cable supplied with one PowerShot fits another.
Canon’s older PowerShot S95 example connects the camera’s digital terminal to a Mac’s USB terminal with the supplied interface cable. That guide covers Mac OS X 10.6 and CameraWindow 8.3, and Canon warns that button locations, screen indications, and settings can differ by model. It is an example for that camera and software era, not a universal set of current steps: Canon’s S95 CameraWindow instructions.

Another model-specific example is Canon’s PowerShot A2300 guide for CameraWindow versions 8.7–8.10. It identifies the IFC-400PCU as a separately sold cable in the described circumstance; that does not establish compatibility with every PowerShot: Canon’s A2300 CameraWindow instructions.

- Movavi Professional Video & Photo Editing Software Kit - Compatible with Windows and Mac Operating systems this software package comes with premium softwares to fulfill your Photo/Video/Vlogging Editing need
- Check the exact PowerShot model in its manual or Canon support page.
- Verify that the cable is the type specified for that model and that both ends are seated firmly.
- Follow the model’s instructions for powering on and connecting the camera, then check whether the computer detects it.
2. Check model-specific transfer software
Do not install a legacy utility just because it appears in instructions for another camera. Canon’s cited PowerShot examples describe CameraWindow 8.3 for an S95 on Mac OS X 10.6 and CameraWindow 8.7–8.10 for an A2300. They do not establish that those versions work with every PowerShot or with a current Windows or macOS release.
Use the support page for your exact model and computer operating system to find the applicable transfer instructions and software, if any. EOS Utility instructions found for Canon DSLR cameras are not evidence that EOS Utility is the fix for a PowerShot that is not recognized.

3. Transfer the photos with the memory card
If your PowerShot uses a removable memory card, you can bypass its USB connection by placing the card in a compatible computer card slot or an external card reader. Canon describes these as image-import alternatives in guidance for an EOS camera; because that page is not PowerShot-specific, check your PowerShot manual and make sure the reader supports both the card format and the computer’s available port: Canon Community recognition discussion.

If the computer still does not detect the camera
If the correct model-specific cable and transfer instructions do not help, contact Canon support for that model or ask about authorized service in your region. A failed connection alone does not establish that the camera has a hardware fault. Connection requirements can be model-specific: for example, Canon’s Rebel T6 wired-connection guidance discusses disabling Wi-Fi/NFC for that DSLR, but that instruction should not be applied to a PowerShot unless its own manual says to do so: Canon Rebel T6 support.
