The Canon PIXMA PRO-200 is a strong fit if your priority is vivid photo printing up to 13-inch-class sizes and you are prepared to manage eight separate ink cartridges. Its strengths are photo output, flexible paper handling, and wireless or wired connectivity. It is a poor substitute for an office all-in-one: it cannot scan, does not automatically print on both sides, and is slow for document work, according to RTINGS’ review.

Is the Canon PIXMA PRO-200 worth it?

For photographers and artists who regularly make color prints, the PRO-200 is worth considering. Its eight-color dye-ink system and support for a range of photo and fine-art media make it a dedicated creative printer rather than a general home printer. RTINGS identifies photo performance as its central strength, while also noting its shortcomings for everyday documents.

It is less compelling if you print only occasionally. An inkjet left unused for extended periods can develop printhead clogging, a risk RTINGS flags in its review. Before buying, weigh the expected print frequency against the ongoing task of replacing individual cartridges; current cartridge costs and availability vary by market and are not established here.

At a glance

  • Best suited to: photo and art prints, especially on glossy media.
  • Print size: borderless output up to A3+ / 13-inch class, with supported sizes dependent on the feed path and media.
  • Ink: eight individual CLI-65 dye-ink cartridges.
  • Not suited to: scanning, automatic two-sided printing, or fast document-heavy work.

What ink does the PRO-200 use?

The PRO-200 uses eight individual Canon CLI-65 dye-ink cartridges: black, cyan, gray, light gray, magenta, photo cyan, photo magenta, and yellow. Canon describes the printer as an eight-color dye-ink model. Individual tanks mean you replace a color as needed rather than replacing a combined multi-color cartridge, but they also make cartridge replenishment part of ownership.

Print quality, resolution, and speed

Canon lists a maximum print resolution of 4800 × 2400 dpi. That specification is a maximum resolution, not a guarantee of identical detail on every paper or in every print mode. RTINGS’ review places strong photo output at the center of the PRO-200’s appeal.

Canon India specifies approximately 35 seconds for a borderless 4 × 6-inch color photo printed on PT-101 paper. That is a specific manufacturer figure for the stated paper size and stock, not a general speed estimate for larger prints, other papers, or documents. RTINGS describes document printing as slow, so this model is better matched to considered photo jobs than high-volume office output.

Supported print sizes and paper handling

Canon lists borderless printing up to A3+ / 13 inches, but the exact sizes that fit depend on the paper and feed route. The printer has a three-way feed arrangement that includes a manual feed path and a multi-purpose tray; Canon India’s specifications distinguish supported sizes by path. Canon’s brochure lists genuine paper weights up to approximately 380 g/m², but that does not mean every sheet at that weight is supported in every feed path.

For long panoramas, Canon India lists printing up to 990.6 mm. Treat that as a regional Canon specification, and confirm the paper, dimensions, and feed method against the product information for your market before planning a job around it.

Paper choices

Canon’s driver manual includes settings for its own photo papers, including Pro Platinum PT-101, Pro Luster LU-101, Plus Semi-gloss SG-201, Matte Photo Paper MP-101, and Premium Fine Art Rough FA-RG1. It also provides settings for categories of commercial media such as photo paper, fine-art paper, canvas-like fabric, Japanese paper, greeting cards, card stock, and transfers. These settings do not guarantee that every third-party sheet will feed or print successfully.

With non-Canon media, check the paper’s size and thickness, confirm the appropriate feed route, and select a suitable media setting. Canon recommends using its Media Configuration Tool to create and add a custom paper profile for non-Canon stock, which can improve feeding and print quality. Keep the driver’s media setting aligned with the printer’s media information. Canon also recommends margins for certain fine-art media, so do not assume borderless printing is available on every surface.

PRO-200 vs. PRO-300: choose by paper type

The most useful distinction is ink type and the surface you expect to print on. In RTINGS’ comparison, the dye-ink PRO-200 is better suited to glossy media, while the pigment-ink PRO-300 is better suited to non-glossy media. That is one reviewer’s comparison, not a universal result for every paper. Your preferred stock, print workflow, and the specific media profile matter.

Also compare the maximum print size you need, whether panorama printing matters, how often you will print, and local availability and cost of replacement ink. No current, independently verified ink-cost comparison is established here, so check the cartridge prices and supply situation in your region rather than assuming one model is cheaper to run.

Connectivity and everyday limitations

Canon lists wireless and wired LAN connectivity, AirPrint, Mopria, and direct wireless printing. These are manufacturer-listed features; operating-system support and setup requirements can differ by region and change over time, so consult the support page for your country before purchase.

The PRO-200 is print-only. RTINGS reports that it has no scanner and no automatic duplex printing, so it cannot scan originals or automatically print the reverse side of a page. Those omissions, combined with slow document output, make it a specialist photo printer rather than a practical replacement for an office multifunction machine.

Who should buy the Canon PIXMA PRO-200?

It makes sense if you

  • Want vivid color photo prints and primarily use glossy or similar photo media.
  • Need prints up to the 13-inch class and have checked the exact size and feed-path support for your paper.
  • Print regularly enough to justify maintaining an eight-cartridge inkjet.
  • Are willing to configure paper settings carefully, especially for non-Canon stock.

Look elsewhere if you

  • Need a scanner, copier, or automatic two-sided printing.
  • Mostly print text documents or need fast document throughput.
  • Will leave the printer unused for long stretches.
  • Primarily print on non-glossy art papers and prefer the pigment-ink profile RTINGS associates with the PRO-300.

Verdict

The Canon PIXMA PRO-200 is a capable photo-first printer for people who value color prints, broad paper options, and large-format output more than office convenience. Its eight dye cartridges and media-specific workflow are reasonable trade-offs for frequent photo printing, but its lack of scanning and automatic duplexing—and its slow document performance—make it the wrong choice as an all-purpose printer.
