The Canon i-SENSYS LBP243dw II is a single-function A4 monochrome laser printer with automatic duplex printing, wired and wireless networking, and manufacturer-rated speeds of up to 36 pages per minute in simplex or 30.2 images per minute double-sided. Its features suit a home office or small workgroup that needs networked black-and-white documents; whether it is economical to run depends on local prices for its Canon 070 and 070 H toner cartridges. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently tested performance results.
What kind of printer is the Canon i-SENSYS LBP243dw II?
Canon describes the LBP243dw II as an “A4 black & white single-function laser printer.” It prints, but does not scan or copy. That makes it a straightforward fit for offices that already have a scanner or multifunction device and primarily need dependable access to monochrome printing. Canon Australia highlights quick replacement of the all-in-one toner cartridge and printing from mobile devices. Canon Australia product page.
How fast does it print, and does it print double-sided?
Yes. Automatic two-sided printing is supported. Canon Europe rates the LBP243dw II at up to 36 A4 pages per minute simplex and up to 30.2 A4 images per minute duplex. A duplex image is one printed side, so the two ratings use different units and should not be compared as though both counted completed sheets. Canon also lists a first-page time of approximately five seconds or less. Canon Europe product information.

These are manufacturer figures, not results from an independent test of mixed office jobs. Canon says actual speed can vary with paper type and size, feed direction, and operating conditions; automatic pauses or speed reductions may occur to manage the printer’s condition and image quality. The rated maximum is therefore most useful as a comparison point, not a promise that every job will print at that pace. Canon LBP243dw II basic specifications and speed notes.

Paper capacity and office workflow
The standard paper setup is one 250-sheet drawer plus a 100-sheet multipurpose tray. The tray is useful when you occasionally need to feed a different paper type or size without replacing the paper in the main drawer. Canon’s II-series function matrix also identifies the optional Cassette Feeding Module-AH as supported, allowing a buyer to check whether an additional cassette fits their workflow. Canon basic specifications and Canon function matrix.
For a small team, 350 sheets of standard input can reduce interruptions compared with a small desktop feed, while automatic duplex can cut paper use for suitable documents. The best fit still depends on how often the group prints and whether its paper sizes and weights are supported; check the model’s specifications before buying specialty media.

Connections, mobile printing and security
The LBP243dw II supports USB 2.0 Hi-Speed, gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000Base-T), 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Wireless Direct. Mobile printing support includes Canon PRINT Business, Apple AirPrint and Mopria for Android. This range allows a user to connect it directly to a computer, share it over a wired or wireless office network, or print from a compatible mobile device. Canon Europe product information and Canon Australia product page.
One model-specific distinction matters for offices evaluating controlled printing: Canon’s II-series feature matrix marks Secure Print as unsupported on the LBP243dw II, while it lists Secure Print for the neighboring LBP246dw II. The matrix lists Department ID Management and Remote UI for the LBP243dw II, but buyers who require a particular security workflow should verify that feature against the exact model rather than infer support from a related printer’s name. Which toner does the LBP243dw II use?
Canon lists Cartridge 070 and high-yield Cartridge 070 H for the LBP243dw/LBP246dw family. The supplied cartridge has an average yield of 1,500 sheets; replacement 070 is rated at 3,000 sheets and 070 H at 10,200 sheets. Canon bases these average yields on ISO/IEC 19752, printing A4 plain paper at default print density. They are standardized averages rather than guaranteed page counts, and actual yield depends on coverage and usage. Canon consumables manual.
Canon UK’s consumables page for the exact LBP243dw II lists the 070H High Yield Black Toner Cartridge. Check the exact printer suffix, regional listing and cartridge identifier before ordering, because compatibility and product names can vary by market. Canon recommends genuine cartridges for optimum print quality; that is Canon’s recommendation, not independent comparative evidence that third-party toner performs worse. Canon UK 070H listing.

How to assess toner cost
Compare the local purchase price of both cartridges against their stated yields, taking into account how frequently you print and how much of each page is covered in toner. The available specifications do not establish current regional prices, so a reliable cost-per-page figure cannot be given without a current price and assumptions about actual yield. The 070 H’s higher stated yield may mean fewer cartridge changes, but its value depends on the price difference in your market.

Size, weight and energy figures
Canon lists approximate dimensions of 399 × 373 × 249 mm and an approximate weight of 9.5 kg. Allow space for access to the paper tray and output, not just the printer’s footprint. The datasheet lists approximately 1,250 W maximum consumption, 480 W while printing, 6 W in standby and 0.9 W in sleep. It also gives typical electricity consumption of 0.29 kWh per week at 230 V. These are Canon figures; actual energy use and electricity cost depend on the user’s print volume, idle time and local tariff. Canon Europe LBP243dw II datasheet.
What the specifications do not establish
Canon’s product pages, manuals and datasheet provide useful configuration and rated-performance information, but they do not establish independent real-world print quality, noise, reliability, mixed-job speed or long-term running cost. Without hands-on results and current local toner prices, those are open questions rather than strengths or weaknesses that can be claimed for this model.
Quick Recap
Who should consider the LBP243dw II?
- Good fit: A home office or small workgroup that needs A4 monochrome printing, automatic duplex, network sharing and mobile-device support.
- Consider another device: Anyone who needs scanning or copying in the same unit, or requires Secure Print on the printer itself.
- Check before buying: Local 070 and 070 H cartridge prices, supported paper requirements, exact regional model identity and whether the standard capacity or optional cassette configuration suits the team.
