Some cancer incidence rates have risen among people under 50, but the pattern varies by cancer and country. A World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) analysis reported significant increases in seven cancer types in England, five in the United States and four in the Netherlands. That does not mean cancer is rising across the board in younger people—or that young adults now face a higher overall cancer risk than older adults.

What did the international report find?

The figures reported by The Guardian describe incidence: new cancer cases per 100,000 people, not cancer deaths or the number of people living with cancer. The analysis treats “early onset” as diagnosis before age 50. The cancers with reported increases differ across the three countries, and the available account does not provide the underlying methods or the statistical threshold used to call an increase significant.

Country or area Cancer and age group Reported incidence pattern
England Prostate cancer in men under 50 1 per 100,000 in 2001; 3.6 per 100,000 in 2023.
England Bowel cancer in people under 50 3.9 per 100,000 in 2001; 8.4 per 100,000 in 2023.
England Uterine and kidney cancers in people under 50 Each rate approximately doubled over the period described, reaching 3.9 and 3 per 100,000, respectively, in 2023.
England Breast cancer in people under 50 42 per 100,000, rising to 47.5 per 100,000 in 2023; the account does not specify the year for the earlier figure.
United States Kidney cancer in people under 50 2.5 per 100,000 in 2000; 5.3 per 100,000 in 2023.
United States Bowel, uterine and pancreatic cancers in people under 50 Each increased by more than 50% over the period described; the account does not give rates.
United States Breast cancer in people under 50 Increased by about 20% over the period described; the account does not give rates.
Netherlands Bowel, kidney, liver and cervical cancers in people under 50 WCRF reported significant increases; rates are not stated in the available account.

The Guardian’s account says the rates of lung cancer among people under 50 declined in all three countries, a pattern it links to falling smoking. The analysis therefore describes different trends, not a uniform rise in every cancer type.

Does this mean cancer is becoming more common in younger people everywhere?

No single dataset establishes that. Other studies offer a broader but still mixed picture because they cover different countries, years, age groups and measures.

International comparisons of specific cancers

A 2025 analysis in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention used 2003–2017 data from 42 countries. Among young adults, rates increased in a majority of countries for six of 13 cancer types studied: thyroid, breast, colorectal, kidney, endometrial cancer and leukaemia. In most cases, increases also occurred among older adults, so the study does not show that younger adults had faster increases for every cancer.

Colorectal cancer in several countries

The International Agency for Research on Cancer reported in 2025 that early-onset colorectal cancer incidence had been increasing by about 4–5% per year in Australia, Canada, the UK and the US, based on recent patterns. The increases were higher among very young adults. This finding concerns colorectal cancer and the countries covered; it is not a rate for all cancers or all young people.

Women aged 15–49 in Europe

An OECD analysis published in 2026 found that age-standardised cancer incidence among women aged 15–49 rose by 16% on average across 24 EU countries, Iceland and Norway from 2000 to 2022, from 144 to 167 per 100,000 women. Age standardisation adjusts rates to account for differences in population age structure; this regional average is not a count of cases or a finding about every country or cancer.

A US analysis that found declines for many cancer types

A study summarized by the US National Institutes of Health in 2025 found declining incidence for 19 cancer types among people under 50. It also found that the total rate of all cancers and cancer death rates did not rise across the younger and older age groups examined. This does not negate increases in particular cancers: it shows why conclusions depend on whether a study looks at selected cancer types or the combined total, and whether it measures incidence or deaths.

Why might rates be increasing?

The causes are not fully understood, and an increase in incidence alone cannot prove what caused it. WCRF has identified possible contributors including overweight and obesity, diet, physical inactivity, alcohol, smoking and environmental exposures such as pollutants and chemicals. These are possible risk factors, not a demonstrated explanation for the reported trends in each country or cancer.

WCRF research translation manager Vanessa Gordon-Dseagu said: “While we don’t completely understand why more cancers are occurring in people under 50 years of age, it is likely that risk factors related to cancer – for example, overweight and obesity, diet, alcohol, consumption and smoking – play a role.”

Could earlier diagnosis explain the increase?

Greater awareness of symptoms and risk factors may lead more people to seek care and be diagnosed. Gordon-Dseagu has also pointed to that possibility, noting that people are increasingly aware of signs and symptoms. But the account says earlier diagnosis does not explain the whole story, and the available figures do not quantify how much of the change it accounts for.

A King’s College London trial funded by Cancer Research UK is intended to investigate rising bowel cancer cases among younger adults and involves 250,000 people. No results are reported in the account, so it cannot yet be cited as an explanation for the increase.

How should younger adults interpret the numbers?

A rising rate can sound alarming, particularly when a comparison starts from a small number. The England prostate cancer figure, for example, rose from 1 to 3.6 cases per 100,000 men under 50 between 2001 and 2023. That is a substantial relative increase, but the 2023 rate remains 3.6 per 100,000. Relative change and absolute incidence answer different questions.

Cancer remains much more common among older adults, and the median age at diagnosis is above 60, according to the Guardian account. The findings are a reason to take symptoms and prevention seriously, not evidence that most younger adults are likely to develop cancer. WCRF executive director of research and policy Giota Mitrou said the changing patterns among younger generations should be treated as a serious research and cancer-prevention priority, while emphasizing that cancer remains more common in older adults.

For readers, the most useful question is not simply whether “cancer” is rising. It is which cancer, in which population, over what years, and whether the figure describes incidence or mortality. The cited studies answer different versions of that question, which is why their findings should not be collapsed into one global trend.
