Science and astronaut health
He will take part in Canadian and international investigations, with many of the Canadian research topics focused on astronaut health. The CSA lists work on mental health, bone density, cardiorespiratory health, perception of orientation, anemia and ocular rigidity. He is also set to test a new physical-training protocol for astronauts. These are mission-level research activities; the CSA’s descriptions do not identify Kutryk as the principal investigator for every study.

Why is this mission significant for Canada?
Crew-13 is the first time a Canadian astronaut has flown under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program and the CSA’s fourth long-duration ISS mission. The Government of Canada said Kutryk’s flight brings the national record to 11 astronauts on 19 space missions.
The CSA and Government of Canada’s October 1, 2026 announcement also described Canadian participation and opportunities connected with ISS activities over the preceding eight years: almost 1,800 highly qualified personnel, 393 students who contributed to space-related research and technology projects, and 52 organizations involved. These are agency-published figures, not results of a separate independent impact study; the announcement says they represent only a portion of the ISS program’s lifetime impact in Canada.
