Yes: Zigbee contact sensors can report when a protected door or window opens, and a compatible home-automation system can use that change to trigger an alarm and send notifications. That setup is not automatically equivalent to a professionally monitored alarm: monitoring, dispatch, backup power, and guaranteed alert delivery are separate capabilities that must be verified.
What door and window sensors actually do
A contact sensor reports whether an opening is open or closed. For example, Aqara says its Door and Window Sensor detects the current status of doors or windows; its product page also describes peel-and-stick installation and gives product-specific battery and hub information. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance tests, and requirements can differ between product generations. Check the exact model and the product information for your region before buying: Aqara Door and Window Sensor.
That open-or-closed signal becomes an alarm trigger only when a hub or controller receives it and automation rules act on it. A sensor alone does not call for help, contact a monitoring center, or guarantee that anyone receives an alert.

What you need for a Zigbee alarm
- Zigbee contact sensors: Install them on the openings you want to protect and confirm that the specific models are compatible with your hub or coordinator.
- A Zigbee controller: In a Home Assistant ZHA setup, compatible coordinator hardware connects Zigbee devices to Home Assistant. Some households may already have a suitable vendor hub; a separate coordinator is not automatically required for every setup.
- Alarm rules: Configure the system to respond to an opening while the alarm is armed. Home Assistant’s Manual Alarm control panel integration can create an alarm entity, with documented examples using door and window sensor states as triggers.
- An alert or siren: Set up the response you want, such as a phone notification or a compatible local siren. These are different response paths and should be tested separately.
Home Assistant ZHA supports many off-the-shelf Zigbee devices through compatible coordinators, but its documentation does not provide an official compatibility list that guarantees every device works out of the box. Verify the exact sensor-and-coordinator combination before committing to a full set of sensors. See Home Assistant’s ZHA documentation.

- [Notes] An Aqara Hub is required and sold separately. (Not compatible with hubs from other brands.) Requires a secure 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection for Hub M2, M1S, E1, M1S Gen2, G2H Pro, and G2H; or 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi for Camera Hub G3. (Hub M2 also supports wired Ethernet via RJ45.)(*Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Door and Window Sensor main unit between the accessory unit is no more than 22 mm )
- [Proximity] For a sturdy connection, ensure that the Aqara Door and Window Sensor is within 400 inches of the Aqara Zigbee hub, and the hub is within the same range from the Wi-Fi router. Additionally, make sure the hub and the router are on the same local area network (LAN). Zigbee2MQTT and comparable third-party USB dongles are not officially supported by Aqara. Full product functionality may be limited or unavailable.
- [Unauthorized Entry Detection & Home Automation] The Zigbee Door Sensor alerts your phone and triggers the Aqara Hub's local alarm upon unexpected door/window openings. It also controls other Aqara devices based on door/window status. Conveniently check your door or window, kids room and anywhere you want to be notified. ***Requires Aqara Hub,not third-party hub.
- [0.86 Inch Wide Gap Allowed]The Aqara Door and Window Sensor works with most types of doors, windows, and other fixtures with similar mechanism, such as drawers, cabinets, and more.(Note: Please ensure that the surface where you plan to stick the Aqara Zigbee Door and Window Sensor is flat and easily adhesive, and the allowed gap between the door is up to 0.86 inch.) The main sensor unit dimension:1.61*0.87*0.43 inch, the magnet dimension:0.79*0.39*0.39 inch.
- [Hands-Free Voice Control]Compatible with Apple HomeKit, Alexa for a hands-free experience.- no need to go downstairs or pick up your phone again. You'll always know whether your home door is opening or closing (The Aqara Door and Window Sensor is not compatible with SmartThings currently.)
How to turn sensor changes into an alarm
- Pair the sensors. Add each contact sensor to the Zigbee network using its hub or coordinator and confirm that Home Assistant or your chosen platform reports its open and closed states.
- Create an alarm entity and rules. In Home Assistant, the Manual Alarm control panel integration lets you create an alarm system. Its documentation shows how door, window, and motion sensor states can be used as triggers: Manual Alarm control panel.
- Choose the armed behavior. Decide which openings should trigger the alarm and under what armed conditions. For instance, you may want a perimeter opening to trigger an alert only when the alarm is armed.
- Configure the response. Home Assistant documents sending a notification when the alarm reaches its triggered state. Add an audible alarm separately if you want one, and confirm that the device and automation behave as intended.
- Test the whole chain. Check sensor state changes, alarm triggering, siren behavior, and phone notifications. A successful test shows that the configured path worked at that time; it does not establish behavior during a power or internet outage.
The broader Home Assistant alarm control panel documentation describes the alarm entity and its states. The examples establish what the software can be configured to do, not the reliability of a particular installation.
How this differs from a regular or monitored alarm
A DIY smart-home alarm and a dedicated alarm service can both use sensors to detect an opening, but the response may be very different. A phone notification tells a configured recipient that an event was reported; it does not by itself provide professional monitoring or dispatch. Home Assistant’s documentation covers alarm logic and notifications, not a guaranteed delivery path or emergency response.

| Question | DIY Zigbee and smart-home setup | Dedicated or monitored alarm |
|---|---|---|
| What happens when a sensor trips? | Depends on the automations, connected devices, and local or cloud services configured by the household. | Depends on the specific system and service; verify the provider’s stated response. |
| Who receives an alert? | Can be a phone or other configured device. Delivery during an outage is not established by the software documentation. | Depends on whether the plan includes professional monitoring and on its alert procedures. |
| Is there dispatch? | Not inherent in a sensor, hub, or phone notification. | Confirm whether the service includes dispatch and under what conditions. |
| What backup is available? | Depends on the specific hub, network, internet connection, and power arrangements. | Check the equipment and plan for power, communications, and outage provisions. |
| What does it cost? | Depends on the actual sensor, hub or coordinator, siren, and any services used. | Depends on equipment, installation, and any recurring monitoring fee. |
There is no evidence here to support a general claim that a DIY setup costs less overall, is equally protective, or responds as reliably as a particular alarm service. A fair comparison needs your actual equipment and service costs, coverage, outage behavior, alert path, and maintenance requirements—not just the price of a sensor.
Check the protocol before buying
Not every product described as a smart door sensor uses Zigbee. Aqara’s Door and Window Sensor P2 is a separate Matter-over-Thread product, and Aqara says it requires a compatible Thread border router. It is not a Zigbee sensor, so it does not meet a Zigbee-specific requirement: Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2.

When this approach makes sense
A Zigbee contact-sensor setup can suit someone who already has a compatible smart-home controller and wants opening alerts or locally configured alarm behavior. It can also be a poor fit if the household expects professional monitoring, dispatch, or a response that continues through outages without separately verifying those features.
