Sometimes, but a powered-off phone usually cannot send a live location through its normal cellular or internet connection. Depending on the model and settings, a phone may still appear in a finding service because it saved a recent location or because nearby devices relayed an offline report. That pin may be approximate or out of date; it is not proof the phone is being continuously tracked.
What “off” means for phone tracking
Three different states are often described as “off,” but they do not mean the same thing for location reporting:
- Online and reporting: A connected phone may provide a current location through its built-in finding service.
- Offline but powered: It may be disconnected from cellular data or Wi-Fi yet still store recent location information or be detected by nearby devices participating in an offline-finding network.
- Shut down or out of battery: Ordinary live reporting stops. Some supported models can remain locatable for a limited period after shutdown, but this depends on the phone and settings. A phone with no usable power cannot continuously determine and transmit its own location.
A finding service can therefore show a current report, a last-known location, or an approximate location relayed by another device. Check the timestamp and status attached to the map pin before treating it as current.
Can an iPhone be found when it is powered off?
Apple says Find My must be enabled before the device is lost. Find My can show a device’s current or last-known location, and Apple’s offline-finding system can use nearby Apple devices to detect a missing device and relay an encrypted location report. The owner may see an approximate location and when it was detected. An offline report does not mean the iPhone is actively sending its location over cellular or Wi-Fi.

Whether a particular iPhone can be found after shutdown depends on the device and its settings. Apple’s guidance does not establish that every iPhone remains findable after a full shutdown, so do not assume that a visible pin is live or that every model supports the same behavior. Can an Android phone be found when it is powered off?
Google says supported devices, including the Pixel 8 series, may be locatable for several hours after shutdown. The phone must have an eligible offline-finding option enabled, and Bluetooth and Location must have been on when it shut down. This is model- and setting-dependent, not a general capability of every Android phone. Google also describes encrypted recent locations and the Find Hub network; an offline result is not necessarily a live location from the phone itself.

Review the available options and conditions for your device in Google Android Help’s lost-device guidance. Do not assume your phone has the same shutdown-finding capability as a supported Pixel model.

A location pin is useful evidence of where a device was reported, but its meaning depends on the report type and age.

- Current location: A recent report from a connected device is more useful for locating it now, though location accuracy can still vary.
- Last-known location: This shows where the phone was detected before it stopped reporting. It may no longer be there.
- Offline-network location: Nearby participating devices may have relayed an approximate location. Check when it was detected; it is not continuous tracking.
Apple describes current or last-known locations, while Google describes encrypted recent locations and offline finding. Neither description makes every displayed pin a real-time position. A report’s timestamp is essential context.
What to do if your phone is missing
- Open the built-in finding service. Use Find My for an Apple device or Find Hub for an Android device.
- Read the location status and timestamp. Treat an old, last-known, or offline-network report as potentially stale and approximate.
- Use the service’s lost-device and account-security controls. Follow the platform’s official instructions for securing the device and your account.
- If you suspect theft, contact appropriate local authorities. Do not rely on a map pin alone to confront someone or recover the phone.
How to improve your chances of finding it next time
- Turn on Find My or your Android device’s built-in finding service before the phone goes missing.
- Review the offline-finding options available for your specific model rather than assuming they are enabled by default.
- For Android shutdown finding, Google’s stated conditions include having Bluetooth and Location on when the phone shuts down.
- Keep in mind that model support, settings, remaining battery, time since shutdown, and the availability of nearby devices can all affect what a service reports.
What about carriers or law enforcement?
The consumer-facing Apple and Google guidance described here does not establish whether a carrier or law-enforcement agency can obtain location information in a particular case. That depends on circumstances and jurisdiction. These sources do not support a universal claim that a carrier, app, or investigator can locate every powered-off phone.
