Not necessarily. The available evidence does not show that Windows PCs universally detect their owners’ exact ages. It does show that Windows can collect diagnostic information and identifiers, while a specific 2017 enforcement case found that VIZIO viewing records were allegedly associated with demographic details including age. Across devices, companies may be able to link activity and build profiles without any single device literally knowing every fact about you.

Does your PC know your age?

There is no evidence here that a Windows PC routinely determines its owner’s exact age. The more precise concern is that device identifiers and activity data can let services associate information with a user or device, and that other systems may use or infer demographic attributes. How often age is inferred, how accurate those inferences are, and whether they are currently used across PCs are not established by the cited sources.

What Windows diagnostic data can include

Microsoft says Windows diagnostic information is stored with one or more unique identifiers. These can help recognize an individual user on an individual device and help Microsoft understand device issues and usage patterns. Required diagnostic data covers the device, its settings and capabilities, and whether it is functioning properly. Depending on Windows version, settings, and sampling, optional diagnostic data may also include websites browsed, device activity, enhanced error reports, or memory from a crash. Microsoft’s Windows diagnostics and privacy documentation explains the categories and choices.

For Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft’s technical documentation says optional diagnostic data can include a unique device ID, a user ID where applicable, event time, IP address, and other identifiers used to correlate events. Microsoft describes diagnostic purposes and, when tailored experiences are enabled, personalization and promotional uses. The specific data tier matters: this is not a claim that all these fields are collected from every PC in every configuration. See Microsoft Learn’s optional diagnostic data documentation.

What the advertising ID does—and does not do

Windows creates a per-user advertising ID that app developers and advertising networks may use to associate personal data they collect with that ID and personalize ads across apps. Microsoft says the control applies to apps that use the Windows advertising identifier; switching it off does not disable every form of interest-based advertising. Windows privacy controls also include diagnostic-data and tailored-experiences choices, whose labels and availability can vary by version. Microsoft’s general Windows privacy settings guide describes these options.

In practical terms, a profile can be assembled from linked identifiers and activity without the PC itself identifying your age. An advertising ID is one possible link, not a universal switch that governs every app, website, or advertising system.

Can your smart TV track what you watch?

It can depend on the TV, its software, apps, settings, and connected devices. The clearest age-related example is a particular historical case, not a finding about every smart TV today.

What the FTC alleged in the VIZIO case

On February 6, 2017, the Federal Trade Commission announced that VIZIO agreed to a $2.2 million settlement with the FTC and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs over charges that it collected viewing histories on 11 million internet-connected televisions without users’ knowledge or consent. The complaint alleged that software captured, second by second, video displayed on the TV—including content from cable and set-top boxes, DVDs, over-the-air broadcasts, and streaming devices.

  • Supports HDMI ARC - Sends audio directly from the HDMI jack to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver, removing the need for an extra cable.

The complaint further alleged that VIZIO combined viewing data with demographic details including age, sex, income, marital status, household size, education, and home ownership, and shared data for purposes including cross-device ad targeting. Those are allegations in a specific enforcement matter and should not be generalized to all manufacturers or current TV practices. The FTC release described the $2.2 million total as $1.5 million for the FTC and $1 million for New Jersey, with $300,000 suspended; the figures reflect the settlement terms announced in 2017. Read the FTC’s announcement and case details.

What independent smart-TV measurements found

A 2020 peer-reviewed study measured network traffic from 57 smart TVs in 41 homes across seven platforms, then separately examined apps among the top 1,000 apps on Roku and Amazon Fire TV. The authors reported connections to known and platform-specific advertising and tracking services, and found that hundreds of apps in their examined datasets sent personally identifiable information (PII) to third parties or platform domains. The sample, platforms, and study period limit what can be concluded about the current market as a whole.

The study authors also reported that some apps sent an advertising ID alongside static PII values, “effectively eliminating the user’s ability to opt out of ad personalization.” That finding applies to the Roku and Fire TV samples they examined, not every app or TV. They also found limitations in DNS blocklists as a way to stop the observed tracking. The study, “The TV is Smart and Full of Trackers: Measuring Smart TV Advertising and Tracking,” is available through Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies.

How can companies connect PC and TV activity?

Cross-device tracking links activity from multiple connected devices—such as computers, phones, and tablets—to a consumer. The FTC described uses including targeted advertising, along with concerns that linkage can happen without people’s knowledge and create larger, more sensitive stores of data. Its 2017 report recommended truthful disclosure and consumer choice, affirmative consent for tracking sensitive topics and precise geolocation, and reasonable security. See the FTC’s cross-device tracking report.

The FTC’s 2016 smart-TV workshop also discussed tracking across TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, apps, and set-top boxes, including viewing-based ads appearing on phones or desktop browsers. That is useful historical context for how such linkage can work, not proof that a particular company currently links your devices. The FTC workshop page outlines the topics discussed.

The important distinction is between the device that records or sends an event and the companies that may receive, combine, or use it. Depending on the setup, information can pass through an operating-system vendor, app developer, advertising network, platform, or data partner. The cited evidence documents possible collection and linkage, but does not establish a universal, current map of who connects every person’s PC and TV data.

What you can check on your devices

Review Windows privacy controls

  • Open Windows privacy settings and review diagnostic data, including whether optional diagnostic data is enabled.
  • Review tailored experiences or personalized offers and decide whether to allow them.
  • Find the advertising ID control and consider turning it off if you do not want apps using that Windows identifier for ad personalization.
  • Check individual app privacy settings and policies as well. These controls do not govern every website, app, or third-party tracking method.

Exact names and locations vary across Windows versions and configurations. Microsoft’s documentation linked above provides the applicable descriptions; use the settings on your own version as the final reference.

Review TV and streaming-device settings

  • Look in the TV’s current privacy settings for viewing-data collection, viewing information, personalized advertising, or similar controls; names and menus vary by model.
  • Review app permissions and privacy policies for apps installed on the TV.
  • Check the privacy settings and policies of external streaming devices too. They may have their own accounts, apps, identifiers, and controls.

There is no single verified menu path or universal setting name for every television, so consult the instructions and settings for your exact model and software.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

  • Documented: Windows diagnostic data can include identifiers and, depending on settings and version, optional activity such as browsing history; Windows also offers an advertising ID that apps may use for personalization.
  • Documented in a specific case: The FTC’s 2017 VIZIO matter involved allegations of viewing-data collection on 11 million TVs and association with demographic information including age.
  • Measured in a bounded sample: A 2020 study observed tracking-related communications from tested smart TVs and app data transmission in examined Roku and Fire TV datasets.
  • Not established: That every PC determines its owner’s age, that every TV tracks viewing in the same way, or how prevalent or accurate age inference is across current devices.
