Yes—but “supports multiple languages” does not mean every part of an app is translated automatically. Mendix, Microsoft Power Apps/Dataverse, and OutSystems document multilingual workflows, but each handles different resources and runtime behavior. To judge whether your platform can serve a second-language audience, check what can be translated, how language is selected, what users see when translations are missing, and whether the feature applies to your app type and platform version.

What does multilingual support need to cover?

A language selector is only one part of localization. A usable second-language app needs translated content across the full user-facing experience, plus a defined way to select and change languages and a sensible result when a translation is unavailable.

Inventory more than the text on the main screens. Mendix identifies captions, grid columns, labels, menu items, microflow messages, and text as translatable content. OutSystems also calls out screen titles and text, expression literals, human-activity instructions, validation and confirmation messages, empty states, and static entities. A review limited to visible screen labels can miss important workflow or data content.

  • Resource coverage: Check UI strings, errors, validation messages, workflow prompts, static data, and system-generated content.
  • Translation workflow: Find out whether translations can be edited in the development environment or exported and imported, and how changes to source text are identified.
  • Runtime behavior: Establish whether language comes from a user profile, browser or device preference, or session setting—and what happens when the requested language is unsupported.
  • Scope: Confirm that the documented behavior covers your app type and the platform version you run.
  • Ownership: Decide who translates and reviews content and who maintains translations as the app changes.

How do major low-code platforms approach a second language?

These examples show documented approaches, not a guarantee that every platform—or every app built on one—handles localization in the same way.

Platform and documented scope Translation approach Language selection and caveats
Mendix Developers can add app languages and translate app content. The documentation lists interface and message resources such as captions, grid columns, menu items, and microflow messages. See Mendix app translation and Mendix translatable texts. Language can be associated with a user; for anonymous users, browser or operating-system preferences can be used. If the requested language is not configured, the app uses its default language. Confirm the behavior in your app.
Microsoft Power Apps canvas apps Microsoft’s documented canvas-app example uses a translation component backed by a table of translations. Its page, last updated March 2, 2023, describes the component approach as public preview. Check the Power Apps multilingual canvas-app guidance for current status. This is a component-based canvas-app pattern; do not assume it is the same as Dataverse solution-label localization or that its preview status has since changed.
Microsoft Dataverse solutions Dataverse documentation covers multilingual solution labels and translation handoff. Exported files can be sent to a linguistic expert, translation agency, or localization firm. See Microsoft’s multilingual solution guidance. This is a solution-label workflow, distinct from the canvas-app component example. It does not by itself establish that all app content or data is translated.
OutSystems 11 Service Studio supports adding locales and translating app resources. Documented resources include labels, validation messages, empty states, expression literals, and static entities. See OutSystems’ translation workflow. The documentation scopes the described multilingual reactive web and mobile app support to Platform Server 11.12.0 or later and up-to-date Service Studio. Apps can offer a language switcher or change language automatically; review the OutSystems feature documentation for the applicable behavior.

Does translation tooling translate the app for you?

No. Platform features can provide places to store translations and workflows to manage them, but they do not establish that every string has been translated accurately or reviewed. Microsoft’s Dataverse guidance explicitly describes sending exported solution files to linguistic experts, translation agencies, or localization firms. Treat translation quality and upkeep as a separate responsibility from configuring the app.

Also distinguish interface translation from data localization. A translated label or menu does not prove that records, user-entered content, formats, or every system message are localized. Check each category that matters to your users in the exact app you plan to deploy.

How should language selection and fallback work?

Verify the language decision in the actual runtime rather than assuming a platform-wide default. Mendix documents using a user’s associated language or, for anonymous users, browser or operating-system preferences; if the requested language is not configured, the app default is used. OutSystems documents binding the current language code to the user session and configuring a default language code.

These behaviors are platform-specific. Test what happens when a user changes language mid-session, opens the app anonymously, or requests a locale you have not configured. Also check what a user sees if a particular string is missing even though the language itself is enabled; the documented fallback behavior for an unsupported language does not necessarily answer every missing-string case.

What should you test before committing to a platform?

Build a small representative flow in the target app type and test it with real translations. Include content from different parts of the app, not just a home screen.

  1. Confirm scope first. Record the platform release, app type, and any documented feature prerequisites. For example, the cited OutSystems 11 guidance sets a Platform Server 11.12.0 minimum for the described reactive web and mobile support.
  2. Translate a realistic sample. Include a long label, a validation or error message, workflow instructions, and static data. Check whether translated text fits the interface and remains understandable.
  3. Exercise language selection. Test the profile, browser/device, or session route your app uses, including a language change during an active session where relevant.
  4. Test unsupported and incomplete cases. Request an unconfigured language and leave one sample string untranslated. Observe whether the app uses a default language, shows a blank or untranslated value, or behaves another way.
  5. Check the maintenance loop. Export and import translations if supported, then change a source string and determine how the translation workflow reveals that update.
  6. Review with fluent users. Have a qualified speaker review meaning and context, especially for errors, instructions, and terms that affect user decisions.

OutSystems states in its vendor evaluation guide that it “also supports right-to-left rendering and full support for Unicode.” Treat that as an OutSystems vendor statement, not a universal low-code capability, and confirm its applicability to your current product version and app.

What the documentation does not settle

Official documentation for these three platform families establishes that multilingual workflows exist, but it is not a survey of every low-code platform or app type. It also does not establish identical behavior for locale-specific formatting, accessibility, right-to-left layouts across all versions, or localization of every kind of user data. Verify those requirements separately against current documentation for your platform and test them in your deployed app.
