LG says its TVs may use device discovery to recognize and connect with compatible devices on your home network, but says that information is used for connectivity—not household profiling, cross-device targeting, or advertising segmentation. If you want to limit other privacy-related features, review your TV’s user agreements and disable any optional features you do not want. There is no documented universal switch that turns off device discovery on every LG TV, so the available controls depend on your model and market.
What “tracking devices” means on an LG TV
Device discovery is a connectivity function. LG says it can help a TV recognize and communicate with compatible external devices, including set-top boxes, DVD players, game consoles, and IoT devices. LG’s September 12, 2026 explanation says information identified through this function is used for connectivity features, not household profiling, cross-device targeting, or advertising segmentation. That is LG’s account of its products, not an independent audit of how every model processes network traffic. LG’s statement on smart TV privacy
Device discovery, nearby Wi-Fi information, and ACR are different
| Function | What it does, according to LG | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Device discovery | Recognizes and communicates with compatible external devices to support connectivity. | LG says it is not used for household profiling, cross-device targeting, or advertising segmentation. |
| Nearby Wi-Fi processing | Processes information about nearby Wi-Fi access points and signal strength. | May help estimate approximate location for ACR where ACR is available and enabled and the relevant agreements have been accepted. |
| Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) | Identifies content from supported sources. | LG describes ACR as optional; its availability and settings may depend on market and model. |
LG also describes voice recognition and interest-based advertising as optional features. The company says applicable agreements can be reviewed, managed, or withdrawn through TV settings. These features should not be conflated with device discovery: changing an agreement or recommendation setting does not, by itself, prove that network device discovery or nearby Wi-Fi processing is disabled. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteReview or change optional user agreements
- On the TV, open Settings > Privacy & Terms > User Agreements.
- Review the agreements shown on your model, especially those concerning viewing information, voice features, and personalized ads.
- Change or withdraw selections for optional features you do not want, following the prompts on screen.
LG’s U.S. support guide says these agreements are optional and are not required for basic smart services. Its instructions are for the menus and agreements available on supported U.S. TVs; menu names and options can vary by model. Check the support information for your exact model and region before assuming a particular agreement is present or controls a specific function. LG’s guide to TV user agreements

Turn off Home menu content recommendations
If your concern is recommendations on the TV’s home screen, LG documents a separate setting:
- Open Settings > All Settings > General > System > Additional Settings > Home Settings.
- Uncheck Content Recommendation.
This controls Home menu recommendations. LG does not describe it as a switch for device discovery, nearby Wi-Fi processing, or ACR. The menu path may differ by TV model or software version. LG’s instructions for Home menu recommendations

What ThinQ registration does—and does not establish
LG’s ThinQ setup instructions say the phone and TV must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, after which the user selects the TV from a device list. This explains one way the app can find a TV on the network; it does not show that every kind of TV device discovery is controlled by the ThinQ app or by a single ThinQ setting. If you cannot find the settings
- Confirm your TV’s model, country or region, and webOS version; LG says menu paths and capabilities vary.
- Use the support page for that specific model or search the TV’s settings for Privacy, Terms, User Agreements, or Home Settings.
- Do not treat a missing menu item as proof that a feature is either enabled or disabled. The reviewed LG guidance does not establish one discovery-off control across all models.
