Your internet service provider can generally tell that your connection is communicating with Tor nodes, but it cannot ordinarily see the names or addresses of websites you visit through Tor Browser. That protects the destinations you access from your local ISP; it does not make every part of your device’s activity invisible or guarantee that no one can identify you.
What your ISP can see when you use Tor
When you connect through Tor Browser, your ISP can generally observe that your connection is communicating with Tor nodes. The Tor Project describes this as what a local ISP can observe once Tor is in use: communication with Tor nodes.
Your ISP cannot ordinarily see through Tor to identify the names and addresses of websites you visit in Tor Browser. Tor routes traffic through multiple relays, adding layers of encryption along the way. Your ISP sees the connection to Tor, not the onward route to each website. The website, in turn, sees a Tor network address rather than your home IP address. The Tor Project explains these protections in its guide to what Tor Browser is and how it works.

How Tor relays affect what others can see
Tor sends traffic through multiple relays rather than asking one intermediary to handle both your identity and destination. The exit relay is the final Tor relay; it connects to the public internet and forwards traffic to the destination site. Tor’s explanation of how Tor works describes this relay structure.
The ISP’s limited view does not mean every relay or website has the same view. A bad exit relay may be able to see traffic sent through it. If the destination connection uses HTTPS, however, the exit relay can see the destination but not the protected page contents. Tor therefore separates what your local ISP can learn from what may be visible farther along the route.

Tor and HTTPS protect different things
Tor routes traffic through relays to conceal your destinations from local network observers. HTTPS encrypts the web connection between the browser and a website, protecting its contents against eavesdropping and tampering. They are complementary protections, not synonyms. The Tor Project’s HTTPS and Tor guidance explains the distinction.

Whether Tor and HTTPS are in use affects what different observers may see. The Tor Project’s HTTPS/Tor visibility explainer discusses categories including the site visited, login details, transmitted data, public IP location, and Tor use. In practical terms, Tor can conceal the destination from your ISP while HTTPS protects the connection’s contents from observers who might otherwise intercept that traffic.
Why Tor Browser matters
Using a different browser configured to send traffic through Tor is not necessarily equivalent to using Tor Browser. Tor Project warns that other browsers may leak identifying information through DNS or WebRTC, reveal fingerprinting details, or retain cookies and cache that can link activity. Its recommendation is to use Tor Browser.

Tor’s protections also do not cover activity you conduct outside Tor Browser. And if you sign in to an account or otherwise identify yourself to a website, that site may know who you are even though it receives a Tor network address rather than your home IP. Tor helps limit network-level exposure; it cannot undo identifying behavior.
How Tor compares with no Tor or a single proxy
| Connection approach | What the local ISP can generally infer | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Tor Browser | That the connection is communicating with Tor nodes; ordinarily not the names and addresses of sites visited through Tor Browser. | Traffic passes through multiple relays. HTTPS separately protects the web connection’s contents. |
| No Tor | Tor’s cited protection against local observers does not apply; HTTPS can protect content, but it is not the same as hiding the destination through Tor. | HTTPS encrypts a site connection; Tor changes the route and what the local observer can learn about destinations. |
| Single proxy | The proxy connection is a different trust model from Tor. | A proxy provider may know both the user and the sites browsed; Tor distributes routing across relays. |
What this does—and does not—say about your provider
The technical answer is about what an ISP can generally observe on the connection: Tor use may be detectable, while destinations visited through Tor Browser are ordinarily obscured. It does not establish what any named ISP stores, how long it retains records, whether it associates them with a customer account, or what it may disclose. Those practices depend on the provider and applicable jurisdiction and require provider- and location-specific evidence.
