Usually, no. Netflix’s supported-TV guidance treats a television app or streaming device as an internet-connected viewing method. If the TV is offline, Netflix does not document a way to save shows directly to that TV and play them later.
You can still watch an eligible download on a larger screen: save it in the Netflix app on a compatible phone or tablet while you are online, then connect that same device to the TV with a video-capable cable or adapter. The download remains on the mobile device, not on the television.
What “without internet” means for Netflix on a TV
Netflix distinguishes between watching through a supported TV app and watching an offline download on another device. The company’s Supported Devices guidance describes supported smart TVs, game consoles and streaming players as devices that connect to the internet to run Netflix. A Wi-Fi outage, disconnected Ethernet cable or unavailable home broadband therefore prevents the normal TV-app method.

What matters is that the TV or streaming device can reach Netflix. If there is no usable internet connection at all, Netflix’s current help material does not document offline downloads stored directly on TVs.

Can Netflix downloads be saved directly to a TV?
Netflix’s current download instructions list these device categories:
- Android phones and tablets
- iPhones and iPads
- Amazon Fire tablets
- Chromebooks with the Google Play Store
The detailed device and operating-system requirements are in Netflix’s How to download titles to watch offline guide. Older operating-system versions may not support downloads. TVs are not included in that download-device list, so you should not expect a Netflix smart-TV app to provide a Download button or an offline library.
A television can display a title downloaded on a phone or tablet, but that is different from downloading the title to the TV. The mobile device remains the playback device and must stay connected to the display by a compatible video path.
How to watch an offline Netflix download on a TV
Use this procedure if you expect to lose internet access and want to watch on a larger screen later.

- Check the device. Use a supported Android phone or tablet, iPhone, iPad, Fire tablet or Chromebook with Google Play Store. Confirm that its operating system supports Netflix downloads.
- Find an eligible title while online. Open Netflix and look for the Download icon on the film or series details page. Netflix says not every show or movie is downloadable.
- Download the title. Start the download before leaving internet coverage. For a series, download individual episodes or the available download option shown by the app.
- Verify the saved copy. Open the app’s Downloads area on the same device and confirm that the title appears there. Do not assume the download will be available on another phone, tablet, TV or streaming player.
- Prepare the wired display connection. Connect the mobile device to an HDMI input using an adapter that supports video playback. The adapter must match the device’s port and the phone or tablet must support wired video output.
- Select the correct TV input. Switch the television to the HDMI input used by the adapter, then open Downloads on the mobile device and start playback.
Netflix specifically identifies Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter for Lightning-port iPhones and iPads. For USB-C iPhones, it recommends Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter while noting that other adapters may work. Some iPhone models do not support wired video output, so check the exact phone or tablet model before buying an adapter. Which viewing methods work when the TV itself is offline?

Why a cable is more dependable than wireless casting
A wired connection sends the mobile device’s video output to the television without asking the TV to fetch the Netflix stream. That makes it the practical option when the internet will be unavailable. It is still conditional: an HDMI adapter that only charges the device, or a phone that cannot output video, will not produce a picture.
Wireless casting is a separate feature from offline downloads. Netflix says AirPlay is not supported. Other casting arrangements work only with compatible devices, and Netflix’s guidance does not promise that a title saved for offline use can be cast while the network is unavailable. If the goal is dependable offline viewing, plan around a supported mobile device and a verified wired adapter rather than assuming a wireless icon will appear.

Netflix states that a subscription allows up to 100 active downloads per device, with the exact number of devices governed by the plan. This is a service limit, not a guarantee that every device can hold 100 large files or that every title can be downloaded.

Look for the Download icon before planning a trip or outage. Netflix says some titles cannot be downloaded because of rights or other availability restrictions. Its Can’t download a TV show or movie help page covers unavailable downloads and related errors.
Downloads may expire after a period of time, and some titles have a limit on how many times they can be downloaded in a year. Netflix does not state one expiration period that applies to every film or episode. Check the Downloads section for the title’s status and refresh or redownload it while you still have internet access if the app indicates that it has expired.
The download is tied to the device that saved it. Moving the account to another TV, copying the file to a USB drive or downloading on one device and opening it from another is not the supported workflow. Keep the original phone, tablet or Chromebook available for playback.

The TV app says it cannot connect
This is expected when the TV or streaming player has no internet. Restore an internet connection for normal TV-app streaming, or switch to a title downloaded on a compatible mobile device and connect that device by cable.

The Download icon is missing
Confirm that you are using one of Netflix’s listed download-capable device types and a supported operating-system version. The particular title may not be eligible. Netflix’s download troubleshooting page explains that not every show or movie can be saved.
The TV shows “No signal” or a blank screen
- Confirm that the television is set to the HDMI input used by the adapter.
- Check that the adapter explicitly supports video playback, not just charging.
- Verify that the phone or tablet model supports wired video output.
- Reconnect the adapter and cable, then unlock the mobile device and reopen Downloads.
If the device itself does not support video output, changing cables cannot add that capability.
The download has expired
Expiration varies by title. Reconnect the device to the internet, open the Downloads area and follow Netflix’s prompt if the title can be renewed or downloaded again. A title with a yearly download-count restriction may not be immediately available for another download.

Casting works online but not offline
That behavior is not evidence that the download is defective. Casting depends on compatible devices and a supported connection, while Netflix does not promise offline casting. Use a wired display path for the saved title, and do not use AirPlay because Netflix says it is unsupported.

What to check before you lose internet access
- Is the phone, tablet or Chromebook on Netflix’s current download-capable list?
- Does the chosen title show the Download icon?
- Is there enough free storage for the planned episodes or films?
- Have you opened Downloads and confirmed that the saved title plays on the original device?
- Does the device support wired video output?
- Does the HDMI adapter support video playback and match the device’s port?
- Do you know which HDMI input to select on the television?
- Are any existing downloads close to expiration?
Why older advice can be misleading
Netflix introduced downloads in a November 30, 2016 announcement, saying, “Just click the download button on the details page for a film or TV series and you can watch it later without an internet connection.” That statement describes the feature’s launch, not a promise that every current device—including TVs—supports downloads. The current device list and download rules in Netflix Help Center documentation should control your setup.
Bottom line for each common situation
Your TV has no internet right now
You cannot rely on the Netflix TV app. Use an eligible title downloaded earlier to a compatible mobile device and connect that device to the TV with a video-capable adapter.
You want to prepare for an outage or trip
Download eligible titles in advance, test them in Downloads, and pack the correct HDMI adapter and cable. Keep the downloading device with you.

Netflix does not currently document that feature for supported TVs. Treat the TV as a display for a compatible downloaded-device setup, not as the download destination.
