Not as two verified, simultaneous turn-by-turn guides. The officially documented workflow is to find a place in Google Maps, hand it to Waze, and then let Waze navigate. You can leave an app running in the background or switch between apps, but the official help does not confirm that both will calculate routes and deliver intelligible spoken directions together. The result also depends on whether you are using a phone, Android Auto, CarPlay, or Android Automotive.
What “at the same time” can mean
The question combines several different behaviors. Separating them prevents a destination handoff from being mistaken for two active navigation sessions.
Two active, turn-by-turn guidance sessions
This would mean Google Maps and Waze are both following a route, recalculating it, and speaking instructions during the same drive. The official Waze, Google Maps, and Android Auto instructions reviewed for this article do not confirm that arrangement. They do not document how two navigation engines share GPS, screen control, notification priority, or audio focus, so there is no supported promise that both sets of directions will play correctly.

Finding a place in one app and navigating with the other
This is the clearly documented combination. You can search for a destination in Google Maps, send that location to Waze, and start the drive in Waze. Only Waze is then the documented navigation app for that session; Google Maps is being used as the search and sharing step.

Leaving one app open in the background
Waze documents background operation and provides instructions for turning the app off. An app remaining open does not prove that it is still calculating a route or issuing voice prompts. Background sharing with a linked third-party app is a separate feature from concurrent route guidance.
What is officially supported on each setup?

These platform distinctions come from official help content checked on October 9, 2026. App interfaces and compatibility can change, so the current help pages should be checked if your software is substantially newer.
How to send a Google Maps destination to Waze on a phone
Use this when Google Maps has the place, address, or business information you want, but you prefer to drive with Waze.

- Open Google Maps and search for the destination.
- Open the location’s information card and tap Share.
- Select Waze from the available sharing targets. If it is not visible, use the phone’s share-sheet option to reveal more apps; the exact appearance varies by operating system.
- When Waze opens, confirm the location it received.
- Choose View routes, review the alternatives, and tap Go now to begin Waze navigation.
This is a handoff, not a dual-navigation mode. Once you start the route, use Waze for the active instructions unless you deliberately switch to another app.

Changing the destination during a drive
Waze’s documented Google Maps workflow also covers changing your destination mid-drive. Have Google Maps identify the new place, use its Share control, select Waze, confirm the location, and then choose the route in Waze. Because interacting with a phone while moving is unsafe and may be unlawful, make the change while parked or use a permitted voice-control method.
Adding a stop from Google Maps
The same sharing path can be used to add a stop to a current Waze drive. Send the stop’s location from Google Maps to Waze and follow Waze’s prompt for adding it to the trip. The official instructions describe the handoff; they do not describe keeping Google Maps as a second route guide while Waze continues speaking.
Using Waze and Google Maps with Android Auto
Android Auto’s navigation guidance treats Google Maps and other compatible navigation apps as choices on the car display. You select the app you want to use rather than activating two navigation sessions as one combined mode.

- Connect the phone to Android Auto and wait for the car display to load.
- Open Waze from the Android Auto app launcher.
- Choose a destination using the available Android Auto controls, or send a location from Google Maps using the documented handoff.
- Keep Waze in full-screen mode when using the Google Maps share flow. Waze’s instructions say the shared location opens in Waze under that condition.
- Review the route and start navigation in Waze.
Android Auto’s own help says the vehicle must be in Park to type a destination on the display. Set the destination and change navigation settings before moving. Android Auto can show Google Maps or another compatible navigation app, but the instructions describe choosing an app, not running both guides concurrently.

Switching between apps
You may be able to move from Waze to Google Maps using the Android Auto launcher and then return to Waze. That is app switching. It should not be interpreted as proof that the first app is still providing route calculations or voice prompts while the second app is in control of the display.
What changes on CarPlay?
Google documents using Google Maps for navigation on CarPlay. Waze separately states that sharing a location from Google Maps to Waze on CarPlay is not supported. Therefore, do not apply the Android Auto handoff steps to a CarPlay installation.
If you want to navigate with Google Maps on CarPlay, start and manage the trip in Google Maps. If you want Waze, open and use Waze through the CarPlay interface when it is available for your vehicle and phone. The official material does not provide a Google Maps-to-Waze sharing path for CarPlay, nor does it establish simultaneous spoken guidance from both apps.
What changes on Android Automotive?
Android Automotive (AAOS) is the operating system built into some vehicles, rather than the phone-projection system used by Android Auto. Waze’s help page says its Google Maps-to-Waze sharing feature is not currently supported on AAOS. A vehicle with AAOS may expose navigation apps in its own interface, but the cited instructions do not establish a supported handoff from Google Maps to Waze there or a way to run both as active guides.

Can one app run in the background while the other is visible?
Waze’s help content discusses linked third-party app sharing that can continue when Waze and the other app are open, including in the background. It also has a separate Turn off Waze procedure that closes Waze and prevents it from running in the background. Those statements concern app state and data sharing, not two route engines speaking at once.
On a particular phone, the operating system may pause an app, limit its location access, or give one app priority for audio. The reviewed official pages do not document a universal result for running Google Maps and Waze together, so treat any apparent overlap as device- and platform-dependent rather than a supported feature. If you hear conflicting prompts, close or stop navigation in one app and keep only the app you intend to follow.

Troubleshooting the Google Maps-to-Waze handoff
Waze is missing from the Share list
Confirm that Waze is installed and that you are using the phone’s normal share controls from a location card, not a different Google Maps screen that does not expose app sharing. Share-sheet entries vary by operating system. If Waze still does not appear, open Waze directly and search for the destination there; the official handoff cannot be assumed when the app is unavailable as a share target.

Confirm the location in Waze, select View routes, and tap Go now. A shared pin is not the same as an active drive, so Waze requires the route-selection step.

The handoff does not work in the car
Check the platform first. Waze documents the Google Maps handoff for Android Auto when Waze is open in full-screen mode, but explicitly excludes CarPlay and AAOS. On Android Auto, open Waze on the car display before sending the location and make sure the phone-car connection is active. On unsupported platforms, start the trip directly in the navigation app you plan to use.
Both apps produce confusing prompts
There is no official guarantee that simultaneous prompts will be intelligible. Stop navigation in one app, close it, or use the operating system’s navigation controls to leave a single app active. Make changes while parked; do not troubleshoot competing audio instructions while driving.
Safety and legal considerations
Waze’s Android Auto guidance tells drivers to pay attention to road and traffic conditions and obey applicable laws. Enter destinations, compare routes, and alter settings before moving. Android Auto’s instructions specifically require Park for typing a destination on the display. If a passenger is present, let that person handle the phone; otherwise pull over safely.
A second app can be useful for checking a place or sharing a destination, but extra screens and overlapping audio increase distraction. The safest interpretation of the official guidance is to choose one active navigation session for the drive and treat the other app as a search or handoff tool.
What the official documentation does—and does not—promise
The help pages from Waze, Google Maps, and Android Auto provide procedural support: how to share a location, how to open Waze on Android Auto, which navigation choices Android Auto presents, and where Google Maps works on CarPlay. They do not provide a test result, benchmark, or statement that Google Maps and Waze can simultaneously recalculate the same trip and speak over one another. They also do not establish identical behavior across phone models, operating-system versions, vehicle head units, or audio systems.
For that reason, the precise answer is conditional: you can use one app to find or share a destination and the other to navigate, and you can switch between apps where the platform allows it; you should not rely on both apps as simultaneous, officially supported turn-by-turn guides.
