Sometimes. Samsung Pay, now part of Samsung Wallet, works at a gas station only when the pump’s payment terminal supports a compatible contactless method. Samsung warns that unsupported readers are commonly found at gas pumps, so check the reader and keep another way to pay available.
Why Samsung Pay may not work at the pump
Samsung Wallet cannot pay through a card reader that does not support NFC or MST. Samsung notes that unsupported readers are commonly found at gas pump stations, but that is a qualitative warning—not a measured estimate of how many pumps accept mobile payments. Acceptance depends on the specific terminal, not simply on whether the station accepts cards.
Samsung describes Samsung Pay as a payment feature in Samsung Wallet for places that accept contactless payments. See Samsung Wallet and Samsung’s transaction error guidance.

- Look for a contactless payment symbol on the pump’s reader.
- Ask the attendant whether that particular pump accepts mobile wallet payments if the symbol is unclear.
- Do not assume that Samsung Pay working at the station’s checkout means it will also work at the pump; the pump and the counter may use different terminals.
How to pay with Samsung Wallet at a supported reader
- Open Samsung Wallet and choose the payment card you want to use.
- Authenticate as prompted by your phone.
- Hold the back of the phone near the terminal’s indicated contactless reader location. Samsung’s in-store payment instructions describe this tap-to-pay process.
If the reader does not register the payment, check that NFC is enabled, try the marked reader area, and remove a thick phone case if it may be interfering with the signal.

What to do if the pump declines or does not support it
If the pump lacks a compatible reader, try paying inside only if the store’s counter terminal accepts contactless payments. Otherwise, use a physical card or another payment method the station accepts. The station controls which terminals and payment methods are available, so an indoor payment is not guaranteed to work either.
