Sometimes—but only if the manual for your exact microwave air fryer combo approves that specific metal accessory for the selected cooking mode. A rack or tray permitted for Air Fry or convection is not automatically safe for microwave-only or combination cooking. Check the model’s accessory chart before using it.
Why the cooking mode changes the answer
Air Fry and convection modes circulate hot air, and some appliances permit specified metal accessories in those modes. Microwave-only cooking uses microwave energy; many manufacturers prohibit metal cookware or restrict particular trays in that mode. A metal item’s approval for one function does not carry over to another.
Combination cooking needs a separate check. A Combi program may use microwave energy together with grill or convection, so an accessory allowed for Air Fry alone may not be allowed in Combi. Follow the instructions for the named program, including any placement requirements.
What manufacturer instructions show
These examples illustrate why there is no universal rule. They apply to the models or guidance named, not to every microwave air fryer combo.

How to check whether your tray, rack, basket, or foil is allowed
- Find the exact model number. Use the label on the appliance and locate its manual; instructions for a similar model or another brand are not a substitute.
- Identify the selected mode. Check whether you are using microwave-only, Air Fry, convection, grill or broil, or a named combination program.
- Match the accessory to both model and mode. Consult the manual’s accessory chart for the exact rack, basket, enamel tray, pan, foil, or other item. Check any stated placement or spacer requirements.
- Use only an item explicitly listed for that mode. If the accessory is not listed or the instructions are unclear, leave it out and ask the manufacturer rather than guessing.
- Remove hot accessories carefully. Follow the manual’s handling directions and use heat-resistant gloves when directed.
Can you use a metal rack or tray in microwave convection?
It depends on the appliance and the mode. A manufacturer may approve a supplied rack or tray for convection while excluding it from microwave-only use. Combination programs may have additional restrictions because they can use microwave energy. Verify the exact accessory and mode in your model’s manual rather than treating “convection microwave” as blanket approval for metal.
Can you use foil or an ordinary metal pan?
Do not assume foil or a metal pan is safe because another appliance permits it. Whirlpool’s limited guidance, for example, includes conditions about keeping metal away from the cavity walls and other metal; that is not general permission for other models. Use foil or cookware only when the manual for your appliance allows that item in the selected mode and gives any required placement instructions.

Why did the microwave air fryer spark?
Arcing or sparking can occur when metal is used in a mode or arrangement the appliance does not permit, and improper use may damage the appliance. If sparking occurs, stop the cycle and consult the instructions for that model before using it again; the appropriate response can vary by appliance. Do not assume that an accessory is safe merely because it was supplied with the unit—check which modes its manual approves.
