Usually, yes: a pass already saved in Google Wallet can often be opened and shown without Wi‑Fi or mobile data. Google explicitly says that a boarding pass saved through its screenshot flow does not require an internet connection to retrieve. That does not mean every pass, issuer, gate, scanner or location guarantees offline acceptance. Save the pass while connected, verify that its barcode or QR code is visible, and treat live updates as a separate feature.
What “offline” means for a Google Wallet pass
People use “offline” to describe three different things. Separating them prevents a last-minute surprise at an airport, venue or transit entrance.
Opening a pass already stored on the phone
This is the part Google documents most clearly. For a boarding pass saved through Google Wallet’s screenshot method, Google says: “You don’t need an internet connection to get your saved boarding passes.” The connection is needed during setup, but not to retrieve that saved boarding pass later. Receiving new information
Some supported boarding passes can show live details such as gate changes and landing status. A phone that is disconnected cannot be assumed to receive a new message from the airline, venue or transit provider. Check the latest details before going offline and reconnect whenever you can.
Having the code accepted at the entrance
Displaying a barcode or QR code is only one step in admission. The issuer controls how its pass is supported, and the gate’s equipment may use its own online validation process. Google’s help pages do not promise that every issuer, scanner or pass type will accept a Wallet code while the phone is offline. Therefore, “the code is visible” and “the system will approve it” are separate questions.
Prepare the pass before you lose signal
Use this sequence while you still have a reliable connection. It covers the failure that matters most: discovering at the gate that the pass was never saved correctly.
- Add the pass while online. If you are using the screenshot-based boarding-pass flow, complete the add process before entering a dead zone. Google requires an active internet connection while that pass is being added.
- Open Google Wallet and select the ticket. Do not rely on an email, browser tab or airline app alone. Confirm that the item appears in Wallet’s list.
- Display the barcode or QR code. Google’s ticket guidance says to open the saved ticket and show its barcode or QR code to an attendant when tapping is not an option. Make sure the code loads in the ticket view rather than merely appearing in a notification preview.
- Read the visible details. Check the passenger or attendee name, date, flight or event information and any seat or gate data shown on the pass. This catches the wrong-ticket problem before you are offline.
- Check current operational information. Look for the latest gate, schedule or event instructions while connected. A pass may support real-time updates, but those updates should not be expected to continue during a connection loss.
- Follow the issuer’s entry instructions. Some providers specify whether to use a barcode, QR code, contactless tap or another identity check. Google says availability and supported features depend on the issuer and location.
Boarding passes: the clearest offline case
Google’s screenshot instructions provide the strongest documented offline scenario. You first need an internet connection to save the boarding pass using that flow. After it is saved, Google states that an internet connection is not needed to get the boarding pass again.
This is a retrieval promise for the saved pass, not a promise that all airline systems operate offline. At the airport, open the pass in Wallet and present the displayed code. If staff cannot use a tap, Google’s ticket instructions specifically describe showing the barcode or QR code for scanning. The scanner or airline system may still determine whether entry can be completed.

Because live information and stored information are different, review the departure details before you lose service. If a gate changes after that point, the copy on your phone may not reflect it until connectivity returns or staff provide an update.
Can an attendant scan a Wallet pass without internet?
You can try the same action you would use online: open the saved item and show its barcode or QR code. This is the practical offline procedure described by Google for tickets. It avoids needing a web page to load at the moment of scanning.
Do not interpret that procedure as a universal offline-acceptance guarantee. A venue, airline or transit operator can require a live check, use a pass format that Wallet does not fully support, or limit a feature to particular countries and issuers. Google’s documentation identifies issuer and location as factors in support. If the attendant’s equipment cannot validate the code without a network connection, only the provider can explain the fallback process.
When an entry point has staff, ask for its documented offline or manual procedure rather than repeatedly refreshing the pass. Keep the code visible and follow the issuer’s instructions for identification or rebooking if validation fails.

Not all Wallet items have the same feature set. The following comparison reflects what Google documents and what remains dependent on the provider.

Google explains how to find more information about supported items in its Wallet support documentation. The same documentation cautions that not every issuer offers every Wallet feature.

What happens with converted files and photos?
Google allows some passes to be made from photos or converted from downloaded files. This can be useful when a provider gives you an image or file rather than a native Wallet button, but conversion is not the same as receiving a fully integrated pass from the issuer.
Google warns that a downloaded pass converted into Wallet may have limited functionality and may not receive updates. That limitation matters most for travel and timed events: the code may remain visible while schedule, gate or status information becomes stale. Verify the saved item and its code before you leave coverage, and retain the provider’s original instructions or file as a backup when its rules allow it.
Do not assume that a converted file will support the same notifications, refresh behavior or validation as a pass issued directly by an airline, venue or transit operator. The provider decides what information its pass contains and how the entrance system checks it.
Will gate, schedule or event updates work offline?
No new update should be treated as reliable once the phone has lost connectivity. Google describes real-time details on supported boarding passes, including gate changes and landing statuses. “Real-time” requires a way for the issuer’s current information to reach the device; an offline phone can show the data it already stored but cannot be assumed to receive a later change.

Before disconnecting, check the provider’s app, website or messages and note the current gate or schedule. At the entrance, pay attention to staff announcements and physical display boards if they conflict with an older Wallet value. Reconnect when possible so Wallet can refresh any supported information.

The item is missing from Wallet
Reconnect if possible and repeat the issuer’s add process. For a screenshot-based boarding pass, the initial save requires an active connection. If you never completed that step, there may be no local copy to retrieve.
The item opens but the code is blank
Use connectivity to reopen or re-add the pass, then check the ticket view again. A notification, email or web shortcut is not proof that the barcode or QR code was stored in Wallet. Google’s documented presentation method is the code in the saved ticket view.
The code is visible but the scanner rejects it
Keep the code displayed and ask the attendant for the issuer’s manual or alternate process. Rejection may reflect the provider’s validation rules, location support or scanner connectivity rather than a failure to retrieve the pass. Google does not publish a blanket guarantee for every gate or event system.

The details look out of date
Assume that a disconnected pass contains the last information it received. Check for updates as soon as service returns and use the provider’s current instructions. A converted downloaded pass may not receive updates at all, according to Google.

The pass came from an unsupported issuer or region
Use the issuer’s own app, website, printed ticket or identification procedure if Wallet support is unavailable. Google states that availability varies by issuer and location, so an option that works for one traveler or event may not be offered in another.
A low-risk offline check before departure
Do a short verification while you still have time to correct the setup. Open Wallet, select the pass, and make sure the complete barcode or QR code and essential ticket details are visible. Then temporarily disconnect from Wi‑Fi and mobile data and open the same Wallet item again. This confirms that the pass is stored locally on your phone; it does not test whether an airline, venue or transit scanner will approve it.
After the check, restore connectivity and review the latest operational information. Keep the phone charged and follow the issuer’s instructions for any identification requirement, because a visible Wallet code is not a substitute for rules imposed by the provider or location.

Google’s official pages establish a specific offline capability: a boarding pass saved through the documented screenshot flow can be retrieved without an internet connection. They also explain how to open a saved ticket and show its barcode or QR code. Separately, they describe real-time information on supported boarding passes and state that support varies by issuer and location.
Those statements do not establish that every Wallet pass is available offline, that every converted file receives updates, or that every entrance scanner can validate a code without a network. Use the saved-pass capability as preparation for a connectivity gap, not as a replacement for the provider’s own acceptance policy.
