Figma has no full-featured offline mode. If your internet connection drops, you may be able to make limited edits in a file and pages already loaded in your browser; Figma stores those changes locally and attempts to sync them when you reconnect. For a prototype presentation, you must prepare it online first. A downloaded local copy is a backup snapshot, not an offline version you can keep editing as the original.
What you can do in Figma without internet
Figma’s offline capabilities depend on what was already open and loaded before the connection failed. Keep the relevant file open: only the current page and other pages loaded during that session are generally available. Figma lists limited editing, using components in the current file, and creating one new file among the available offline actions. The exact actions are limited; this is not equivalent to normal online access. Figma’s offline capabilities and limitations
Offline access does not include opening files that were not already open, accessing unloaded pages, receiving collaborators’ updates, inserting library instances, installing new plugins, version-history operations, or multiplayer features. In Figma’s words, “Autosave is a safeguard in the event that something goes wrong, it’s not a fully-featured offline mode.”
How offline edits are saved and recovered
When the connection drops, Figma may keep pending edits in browser storage on that device. It attempts to apply them when you are online again. They are not available from another device, and recovery depends on retaining the local browser data. Figma’s guidance on files that do not open
#1 Best Overall
Protect pending changes
- Do not clear the browser cache or browsing data before pending edits have synced.
- Avoid private browsing, switching browsers or devices, and closing out of the browser storage context that holds the changes.
- Storage limits, blocking extensions, and unsupported browsers can prevent local recovery.
- Figma says most browsers may retain offline changes for up to 30 days and Safari for 7 days. These are browser-specific retention windows, not a guarantee that changes will remain recoverable for that long.
Reconnect and check the file
- Restore a stable internet connection on the same device and in the same browser used for the offline edits.
- Reopen or reload each affected file so Figma can attempt to sync its pending changes.
- Confirm that Figma reports the changes saved. If it reports a conflict, review version history once online before deciding which changes to keep.
Prepare a prototype for an offline presentation
Prototype playback has a separate preparation step. While online, open the prototype in presentation view, enable “Make available offline,” and wait until Figma indicates that it is ready. Keep the presentation view open for the offline session. Figma says this option does not work on mobile devices, and very large prototypes may exceed browser download limits. Figma’s instructions for presenting prototypes offline
Prepare design files before an outage
- While online, open the exact file you expect to use.
- Open every page you may need so it has loaded during the session.
- Keep the relevant file open when the connection drops; do not rely on opening an unvisited file or unloaded page later.
- For a prototype presentation, prepare it separately using the offline presentation steps above.
- After reconnecting, reopen affected files and verify that pending changes have synced before clearing browser data or moving to another device.
When a downloaded local copy helps
Figma lets you save a local copy as a manual backup. It is a snapshot, not a way to continue editing the original offline: local copies omit comments and version history, and reimporting one creates a new file disconnected from the original. Use this only when those losses and the separate-file workflow are acceptable. Figma’s instructions for saving a local copy

Does the Figma desktop app work offline?
The desktop app does not remove Figma’s connectivity limitation. Figma describes it as providing the same features as the browser and says reliable, stable internet is required for normal access. Figma’s desktop app guide
