Not by installing a DDR4 stick directly. In a late-2021 demonstration, an ASUS ROG motherboard engineer showed a prototype adapter that let one DDR4 module work on a DDR5-only ROG Maximus Z690 Apex—but the setup required a special BIOS. It was not proof of a general-purpose adapter or a retail product. ASUS’s manual for that motherboard explicitly says not to install DDR4 in its DDR5 slots.
What ASUS demonstrated
Contemporaneous reporting by HotHardware identified the demonstrator as Lin Dabing, known as “Bing,” an ASUS ROG motherboard R&D engineer. The prototype was shown with an ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Apex motherboard and a G.Skill Trident Z Royal DDR4 module. The motherboard used a special BIOS for the arrangement.
As PC Gamer described it, the DDR4 module sat on a converter card, which was then inserted into the motherboard’s DDR5 slot. This was a specific prototype setup—not a claim that DDR4 and DDR5 slots are interchangeable, or that any adapter will make any DDR4 module work in any DDR5 motherboard.

Why the adapter needed more than a physical connection
DDR4 and DDR5 differ in how memory is powered and managed. The reports describe DDR5 as having power management on the memory module, while DDR4 relies on the motherboard for that function. The adapter therefore had to accommodate differences beyond the shape of the connector.

- AMD Socket AM5: Supports AMD Ryzen 9000/Ryzen 8000/Ryzen 7000 Series Processors
- DDR5 Compatible: 4*DIMMs with AMD EXPO & Intel XMP Memory Module Support
- Commanding Power Design: Twin 14+2+1 Phases with 70A Power Stage Digital VRM Solution, 8-Layer 2X Copper PCB
- Cutting-Edge Thermal Design: 6mm Heatpipe, Fully Covered MOSFET Heatsinks, M.2 Thermal Guard, PCIe Ultra Durable Armor
- Next Gen Connectivity: PCIe 5.0, PCIe 5.0 NVMe x4 M.2, Front and rear USB-C
The special BIOS matters just as much: a card’s wiring alone does not establish that the board firmware can initialize and operate the memory. Compatibility depends on the motherboard’s design and firmware as well as the processor’s capabilities.
Why the prototype is not a practical shortcut
PC Gamer reported several drawbacks in the version shown. These are reported limitations and analysis of the prototype, not results from an independent performance test.

- AMD Socket AM5: Supports AMD Ryzen 9000 / Ryzen 8000 / Ryzen 7000 Series Processors
- DDR5 Compatible: 4*DIMMs
- Power Design: 14+2+2
- Thermals: VRM and M.2 Thermal Guard
- Connectivity: PCIe 5.0, 3x M.2 Slots, USB-C, Sensor Panel Link
- Height: The card made the memory assembly tall enough to potentially interfere with some air coolers.
- Capacity in the demonstrated version: It held one memory module.
- Firmware work: A substantial BIOS effort would be needed to support the arrangement.
- Signal integrity: The longer memory traces could limit the clocks and timings achievable compared with using DDR4 on a motherboard designed for DDR4.
The cited reports provide no independent benchmark or latency measurement for the adapter. They also document a prototype, not a confirmed product release. The available reporting does not establish whether it later became available for sale.

The ROG Maximus Z690 Apex User Manual says its DIMM slots are designed for DDR5 modules. It also gives a direct warning: “DO NOT install a DDR, DDR2, DDR3, or DDR4 memory module to the DDR5 slot.” Read the ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Apex manual for the board’s official installation instructions.

- AM5 Socket: Ready for AMD Ryzen Desktop 9000, 8000, and 7000 Series Processors
- BIOS Update maybe required when used with AMD Ryzen Desktop 9000 and 8000 Series CPU Processors
- Robust Power Solution: 12 plus 2 power stages with 8 plus 4 pin ProCool power connectors, high-quality alloy chokes, and durable capacitors to support multi-core processors
- Optimized Thermal Design: Massive VRM heatsinks with strategically cut airflow channels and high conductivity thermal pads
- Next-Gen M.2 Support: One PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot and two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots, all with heatsinks to maximize performance
That warning is about inserting a DDR4 module directly into the Apex’s DDR5 slot. The prototype demonstration used a converter card and special BIOS; it is not a reason to ignore the manual or try an unverified adapter.

Some processors can support either memory generation, but that does not mean a single motherboard accepts both. Check the exact motherboard model’s memory specification and qualified vendor list (QVL), and confirm any BIOS requirements before buying or reusing RAM.

- Choose the memory generation first. Decide whether your build will use DDR4 you already own or a DDR5 kit.
- Match the motherboard to that choice. ASUS’s Z690 motherboard specifications show that different board models are built for different memory types. Check the specification for the exact model, rather than relying on the chipset name.
- Check the processor and board together. Intel’s memory compatibility information, last reviewed July 2, 2025, lists 12th Generation Intel desktop processors as supporting DDR5-4800 MHz and DDR4-3200 MHz. It also lists LGA1700 and Intel 600-series chipset motherboards for those processors. Those CPU-level figures do not override the memory type specified for a particular board.
- Check the board’s supported memory and firmware details. Consult its specification, QVL, and BIOS notes for the memory modules and configurations it supports.
If you want to reuse DDR4, choose a motherboard explicitly built for DDR4 and compatible with your processor. If you want DDR5, use a DDR5 motherboard and supported DDR5 memory. The adapter demonstration does not provide a dependable third path for a normal build.
