You can use music in a YouTube video when you have permission that covers that use, or when a relevant legal exception applies. A song’s availability online, credit to its creator, or a decision not to monetize does not grant that permission. Even properly licensed music can trigger a Content ID claim, so keep your license and understand how to resolve a claim before publishing.
What permission do you need to use music on YouTube?
Permission must cover the way you plan to use the music—not just listening to it or including it in a personal playlist. A song’s composition and a particular recording can involve separate rights, and the necessary rights may be held by different people or organizations. Make sure your permission covers the music you are actually using.
Check the terms for the intended video, including whether they permit YouTube use and monetization, which territories and formats are covered, how long the permission lasts, and whether it applies to your channel or a client’s channel. Follow any attribution requirements. Keep a copy of the license, receipt, track identifier, and the terms that applied when you obtained it.

Original music, permission from the relevant rights holders, applicable copyright exceptions, Creative Commons works used under their terms, and public-domain works may all provide a route to using music. Exceptions and public-domain status depend on jurisdiction and the specific work or recording; an old song is not automatically public domain in every place. If the legal basis is uncertain or a dispute could have serious consequences, consult a qualified legal professional.

Which music routes are available, and what do they cover?
YouTube identifies its Audio Library, Creator Music where available, original music, permissioned music, and other properly licensed music as possible routes. The terms are not interchangeable: check the specific track and permission rather than assuming that a catalog or label clears every use.
| Route | Permission and documentation | Monetization and formats | Claim considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Audio Library | Use the track-specific terms shown in the library; provide attribution if required. | YouTube recommends it for creator videos. Check the track’s terms for any use-specific conditions. | YouTube describes the catalog as copyright-safe for YouTube creator videos, but no route guarantees a claim-free upload. |
| Creator Music | Terms, availability, and permitted uses vary by track and territory. Check each track’s details. | Some tracks can be licensed at no cost with usual monetization treatment; others allow revenue sharing. The cited licensing and revenue-sharing terms cover long-form videos, not Shorts or live streams. | A licensed track may still require you to understand the claim workflow. A video may be fully monetized only if all other third-party material is also licensed or otherwise cleared. |
| Original music or direct permission | Use music you created or obtain permission covering the video use and any other relevant rights. Keep records of the permission. | Monetization depends on the permission and any other material in the video. | A Content ID match can still happen, so retain evidence that you have the necessary rights. |
| Creative Commons or public-domain music | Verify the specific license or public-domain status, including any attribution or other conditions. Rules can depend on jurisdiction and recording. | Monetization and format rights depend on the applicable terms. | Do not assume that a free download or the age of a composition settles the status of a particular recording. |
| Third-party music license | The provider’s license governs. Confirm that it covers YouTube, monetization, territories, formats, duration, and channel or client use as applicable; save the terms and proof of purchase. | Rights and restrictions vary by license and track. | YouTube says Content ID does not know that you bought rights on another website, so a claim may still appear. |
YouTube Audio Library
You can find the Audio Library through YouTube Studio. Read the terms shown for the individual track, including any attribution requirement. YouTube also lists it as an option for replacing claimed audio in Studio Editor.

Creator Music
YouTube Help guidance available in 2026 says Creator Music is available to creators in the YouTube Partner Program in the United States, with expansion outside the U.S. pending. Availability, supported territories, and permitted uses vary by track. Some tracks can be licensed at no cost while retaining the usual monetization treatment; other tracks offer revenue sharing with rights holders. Any creator share depends on the track and applicable rules, so there is no universal percentage to expect.

Under the cited Creator Music terms, licensing and revenue-sharing tracks are for long-form videos—not Shorts or live streams. Check the track’s current usage details and territory before using it. Revenue sharing has conditions, and the revenue split is adjusted to account for music rights.

Does credit, a purchase, or a short clip make the use legal?
- Credit: Naming the artist or linking to a song does not itself grant permission.
- Owning a copy: Buying or possessing a recording does not by itself establish the rights needed to include it in a video.
- A “free” label: A description or download page is not a license. YouTube says Content ID does not take written descriptions of “free” music into account.
- Not monetizing: Turning off monetization does not itself provide permission or make a dispute valid.
- Using only a few seconds: The cited YouTube guidance establishes no safe duration threshold. Do not rely on a supposed five-second or similar rule; assess the rights and any applicable exception.
What is a Content ID claim, and how is it different from a strike?
YouTube describes Content ID as an automated system that compares uploads with audio and visual reference files submitted by copyright owners. A match can result in a Content ID claim. Depending on the rights holder’s policy, the video may be blocked, monetized—sometimes with revenue shared with the uploader—or tracked. Policies can vary by territory, so availability and monetization may differ from one country to another.
A claim can affect a video’s availability or earnings, but it is not itself a copyright strike. A strike follows a separate process: a copyright owner submits a removal request, and if YouTube finds it valid, the video is removed and a strike is applied. An unfamiliar claimant name alone does not show that a claim is invalid; more than one claimant may assert rights over different material or territories.

YouTube Help guidance available in 2026 says a claimed video longer than three minutes may remain viewable when the rights holder chooses to track or monetize it. The same guidance says one-to-three-minute Shorts with active claims are blocked. Short-form policies can change, so check the current YouTube Help guidance for the rule that applies when you upload.
Can you monetize a video that contains copyrighted music?
Possibly, but having music in a monetized video is not enough to establish that you can keep all of its revenue. A rights holder may choose a policy that monetizes the video, sometimes sharing revenue with you, or blocks it. A valid license may permit monetization under its terms, while Creator Music revenue-sharing tracks have their own conditions and track-dependent calculations.

For a video using Creator Music, YouTube says full monetization may be possible when all other third-party material is also licensed or otherwise cleared. Check every track and other third-party element in the video; permission for one song does not clear unrelated material.
How do you remove or replace claimed music?
- Inspect the claim in YouTube Studio. Identify the claimant, matched work, timestamps, and any territorial restrictions. If there are several claims, check each one.
- Choose whether to accept the claim or edit the video. If the claim is valid or you do not want to contest it, you can leave it as is. To try to clear it, YouTube lists trimming out the claimed segment, replacing the claimed audio with Audio Library music, or muting the song or all audio.
- Preserve an original before editing. YouTube warns that Studio Editor changes saved since June 2025 cannot be reverted. Keep a separate copy of the original video and check the edited result before saving.
- Check the result and remaining claimed material. If any claimed portion remains, the claim may remain too. Review the final video and the claim status rather than assuming an edit cleared it.
When should you dispute a Content ID claim?
Dispute only when you have a defensible basis: you have all necessary rights, believe a copyright exception applies, or believe the match is wrong. A license can be relevant evidence if it covers the specific use, but keep the license and be prepared to show how it applies. Credit, owning a copy, or choosing not to monetize is not a valid reason by itself.
After you submit a dispute, the claimant has 30 days to respond, according to YouTube Help guidance available in 2026. YouTube does not decide whether you should dispute and does not mediate the underlying copyright disagreement. An unsupported dispute can lead the claimant to request a takedown; if YouTube finds that removal request valid, the video can be removed and your channel can receive a strike. If the stakes are significant or your legal position is unclear, get qualified advice before proceeding.

A strike means YouTube removed content after finding a copyright removal request valid. YouTube Help guidance available in 2026 lists these account-level consequences and resolution routes:
- A strike can expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School.
- Retraction of the removal request and a valid counter notification are other listed resolution paths.
- Three active copyright strikes within 90 days put your channel and associated channels at risk of termination.
- A live stream removed for copyright can also lead to a strike and temporary live-streaming restrictions.
These are YouTube’s platform rules, not a judgment about whether a particular use is lawful in every jurisdiction. Review the notice and YouTube’s current guidance promptly if a strike appears.
