Yes. Apple Home can operate accessories made by different manufacturers when each product explicitly supports Apple Home/HomeKit or a Matter device type that the Home app supports. The logo on the box is not enough: compatibility depends on the exact model, its firmware and functions, the way it connects (Wi‑Fi, Thread or a manufacturer bridge), and whether your setup needs a home hub.

Matter can let one accessory participate in more than one compatible smart-home app, but it does not make every Matter feature available in Apple Home. Verify the product and your software version before buying.

What “multi-brand” compatibility means in Apple Home

Apple Home is the control app; it is not limited to Apple-manufactured accessories. A light from one company, a lock from another and a sensor from a third can appear in the same Home, provided each accessory has a supported integration.

Use one of these two tests for every product:

  • Apple Home or HomeKit label: The manufacturer explicitly identifies the exact model as working with Apple Home or HomeKit.
  • Matter support: The product is a Matter accessory in a category currently supported by Apple’s Home app. Matter support must be checked at the model and feature level, not inferred from the brand or a generic “smart home” claim.

Apple’s setup and troubleshooting guidance stresses checking the individual accessory, software and network rather than assuming that an entire manufacturer’s range is compatible. See Apple’s Matter accessory guidance and its accessory setup troubleshooting.

Matter accessory categories Apple Home currently supports

Apple lists the following Matter categories for the Home app. This is a category-level list, not a guarantee that every model or advanced function in a category will work.

Category Examples of what to verify on the exact product
Air conditioners Whether the model exposes the controls you need in Apple Home
Bridges Which downstream accessories the bridge makes available
Lights Dimming, color and any scenes or effects supported by that model
Locks Lock state, controls and any authentication requirements
Outlets On/off control and energy features, if offered
Switches Switch operation and any extra controls
Thermostats Modes and temperature controls exposed through Matter
Blinds and shades Open, close and position functions available to Home
Motion sensors Motion events and automation triggers
Ambient-light sensors Light-level readings and supported automations
Contact sensors Open/closed state and notifications
Temperature sensors Current readings and automation conditions
Humidity sensors Humidity readings and automation conditions

This list is quoted from Apple Support’s “Pair and manage your Matter accessories” article. Product makers may require a firmware update before Matter functions appear, and a device can expose fewer controls in Apple Home than in its own app.

How one accessory can work with more than one app

Matter is designed for multi-admin use: an accessory paired in one Matter ecosystem can be added to another ecosystem that supports the same device type. Apple says a previously paired Matter accessory can be added in the Home app by choosing Add Accessory, then More Options, and selecting the accessory. The manufacturer’s app may need to generate a new pairing code.

Apple also says paired Matter accessories synchronize through iCloud Keychain regardless of which device or app was used for the original setup. That explains how an accessory can remain available to its original Matter app while also being commissioned into Apple Home, subject to the accessory’s implementation and the functions each ecosystem supports. Multi-app pairing is not a promise that every scene, diagnostic, subscription feature or proprietary control will transfer.

Check these requirements before you buy

1. Confirm the exact model and functions

Read the manufacturer’s specifications for the model number, not just the product family. Look for an explicit Apple Home/HomeKit badge or Matter certification and identify the Matter device type. Then check that the functions you care about—such as color lighting, lock controls or energy readings—are listed for Apple Home.

2. Identify the connection method

  • Wi‑Fi: Confirm that your network and the accessory’s Wi‑Fi requirements match. Apple notes that some accessories require a 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network.
  • Thread: A Thread accessory needs Thread-capable infrastructure for Thread functions.
  • Manufacturer bridge: Some products communicate through a bridge. Check whether the bridge itself is Apple Home/Matter compatible and whether it must be updated or remain connected.

3. Check software and app requirements

Update the iPhone or iPad, the accessory firmware and any required manufacturer app before pairing. A maker may require its app for initial commissioning, firmware updates or generation of a Matter pairing code even when daily control occurs in Apple Home.

4. Decide whether you need a home hub

Remote control while away, shared access for household members and automations are the main reasons to plan for a home hub. Apple recommends a hub for the best Matter experience, although current software can change what is possible without one. Thread requirements are separate and may require a Thread-capable hub or border router.

How to add a different-brand accessory to Apple Home

  1. Update first. Install current updates for your iPhone or iPad, the accessory and any bridge. Follow the maker’s instructions for firmware updates.
  2. Open Apple Home. In the Home app on an iPhone or iPad, choose Add Accessory.
  3. Pair a new accessory. Scan the product’s HomeKit or Matter QR code, or enter its setup code when Home requests it. Keep the accessory powered and within the recommended network range.
  4. Import an accessory paired elsewhere. Choose More Options and select the previously paired Matter accessory. If it is not listed, open the manufacturer app and use its option to generate a Matter pairing code, then return to Home.
  5. Complete room and naming details. Assign a room and a clear name so Siri commands and automations identify the correct device.
  6. Finish any bridge setup. If the maker requires a bridge, leave it powered and connected, and complete its Apple Home or Matter setup before testing downstream devices.
  7. Test locally. Turn the device on or off, change a supported setting and trigger any sensor event. Test the functions you actually plan to automate rather than assuming every feature transferred.

Apple’s illustrated instructions are in the iPhone accessory setup guide. The exact labels can vary slightly by iOS release and accessory type.

Home hubs, Thread and control from outside the home

What a home hub adds

Apple describes a home hub as the infrastructure for controlling accessories when you are away, sharing the home with other people and running automations. Without a hub, local control may still be possible in cases supported by your iOS version and accessory, but remote access and dependable automation should be treated as hub-dependent.

Why Thread is a separate consideration

Thread is a low-power network used by some Matter accessories. A Thread accessory cannot rely on an ordinary Wi‑Fi connection for Thread functions; it needs Thread-capable infrastructure. Apple identifies HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation) and certain Apple TV 4K models among its Thread-capable devices, and it also lists compatible third-party Thread border routers. Verify the exact hardware model in Apple’s Thread requirements documentation.

Reconciling Apple’s hub guidance

Apple’s support pages describe different setup situations. The Matter article says iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub in supported cases, while the iPhone setup guide states that Matter accessories require a hub and recommends one for the best experience. Treat this as a software- and function-dependent distinction, not a universal hub-free promise. Follow the instructions shown for your iOS version and the particular accessory; plan on a hub for remote access, sharing, automations or Thread infrastructure.

Troubleshoot an accessory that will not add or respond

Symptom Checks and corrective action
Home cannot find the product Confirm the exact model supports Apple Home/HomeKit or a supported Matter type. Power-cycle it, bring the phone close, and scan or enter the correct setup code.
Matter device was paired in another app but is missing from More Options Update the accessory and its original app, then have that app generate a Matter pairing code. Make sure the device is still commissioned and available in the original ecosystem.
Pairing stops during setup Check the phone and accessory updates, the required bridge, and network compatibility. Some accessories require 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi.
Several brands stopped responding Update the controlling Apple devices, verify they use the same accessory Wi‑Fi network, and restart affected accessories, hubs and bridges. Apple’s “If your accessories aren’t responding” guide covers these steps.
Works at home but not away Remote control requires a home hub. Check that the hub is powered, online and using the same Home.
Thread accessory is unavailable Confirm that a Thread-capable hub or border router is present, supported for the exact accessory and operating normally.
Basic control works but an advanced feature is absent Check whether that feature is exposed through the Matter device type and Apple Home. Matter compatibility does not guarantee feature-for-feature parity with the maker’s app.

Apple’s general setup checklist is available at If you can’t add an accessory to the Home app. If only one accessory fails, investigate that model’s firmware and bridge first; if many fail together, investigate the network, hub or border router.

A practical comparison checklist for competing accessories

When two products appear similar, compare them on the points that affect Apple Home rather than on brand recognition:

Decision point What to verify Why it matters
Platform support Explicit Apple Home/HomeKit or Matter statement for the exact model Prevents buying a product that works only in the maker’s app
Supported category Whether Apple lists that Matter type and the model’s functions Category support does not guarantee every advanced feature
Transport Wi‑Fi, Thread or a manufacturer bridge Determines network, power and infrastructure requirements
Remote and shared use Whether you need away-from-home control, sharing or automations These uses generally call for a home hub
Firmware path How updates are delivered and whether the maker’s app is required Updates can be necessary before pairing or for reliability
Bridge and border-router compatibility Exact supported hub or Thread border-router models Hardware support varies; do not infer it from a brand name

Examples of sensible mixed-brand setups

Wi‑Fi outlet plus lights from another maker

An Apple Home/Matter-compatible outlet and compatible lights can share a room and an automation. Verify each exact model, confirm the outlet appears as an outlet and the lights expose the controls you need. If the outlet requires 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi, your network must provide it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Thread sensor with a Matter light

This combination can work across manufacturers, but the sensor’s Thread requirement adds an infrastructure check. Confirm a supported Thread-capable hub or border router before purchase, then test the sensor event as an automation trigger after pairing.

Accessory already installed in another Matter app

Keep the original installation, use the manufacturer app to produce a Matter pairing code when requested, and add the device through Home’s More Options path. Expect the original app to remain useful for firmware or proprietary features.

Keep a mixed-brand Apple Home reliable

  • Record each accessory’s model number, connection type and bridge relationship.
  • Install firmware updates from the manufacturer, especially before troubleshooting a new pairing.
  • Use descriptive room and device names to avoid ambiguous Siri commands.
  • After a network, hub or bridge change, test one device from each connection type.
  • Do not remove a working Matter accessory from its original ecosystem unless the maker’s instructions require it; multi-admin pairing may let both ecosystems remain active.
  • When Apple or a manufacturer changes supported categories, re-check the current support pages and the device’s firmware notes.

Bottom line

Apple Home can be a mixed-brand system. Choose products with explicit Apple Home/HomeKit or supported Matter compatibility, verify the exact functions and connection method, and add them through the Home app or Matter’s multi-app pairing flow. A hub is the practical choice for remote control, sharing and automations, while Thread products require compatible Thread infrastructure. If pairing fails, start with model support, updates, network requirements and the hub or bridge before blaming the brand.
