Yes—if the tablet has a working GPS/GNSS receiver and you download suitable maps before you leave. Satellite positioning does not require cellular internet, but Google Maps or another online-only map cannot display terrain that was never saved to the device. Check your exact tablet model, prepare maps for your route, and test the setup in airplane mode before relying on it outdoors.

What an offline hiking GPS needs

There are two separate requirements: a way to determine your position and map data stored on the tablet. Gaia GPS explains that after maps are downloaded, a device can use its GPS chip to locate itself and navigate without internet access: Does Gaia GPS work offline? A position dot by itself is not a useful topographic map, and downloaded map tiles do not help if the tablet cannot obtain a position.

  • GPS/GNSS hardware: The tablet must have a usable satellite receiver, or you must separately verify that a compatible external receiver works with the device and app. An app cannot add satellite hardware to a tablet.
  • Offline map data: Your app must let you save maps covering the route and surrounding area to local storage.
  • Working software and power: The app must still install and run on the tablet’s operating system, and the older device must hold enough charge for your intended outing. Battery runtime depends on the actual tablet’s condition; age alone does not establish how long it will last.

Check whether your tablet has GPS

Look up the exact model number—not just the product family—and verify its specifications for GPS or GNSS. Then check that the mapping app supports the tablet’s operating-system version. A tablet that can connect to Wi-Fi is not necessarily equipped with satellite positioning.

If it is an iPad

Apple identifies GPS as a feature of Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad models. For example, its specifications for the 10th-generation iPad list GPS/GNSS for the Wi-Fi + Cellular version, while the Wi-Fi-only version lists Wi-Fi but not GPS/GNSS: Apple iPad (10th generation) technical specifications. Wi-Fi-based location estimates may work near known networks, but they are not a dependable way to establish your position in remote wilderness.

Expect positioning limits

Even a tablet with GPS may not show a continuous position fix. Apple notes that terrain and other obstructions, including mountains, can block satellite visibility; location services may then rely on Wi-Fi or cellular assistance until visibility returns: Apple: About privacy and Location Services. In a remote area those assistance networks may be unavailable, so do not treat the tablet’s location as guaranteed or perfectly precise.

Prepare and test offline maps

  1. Confirm the app and map coverage. Install an app that supports offline downloads and check that its available map sources cover your route. Gaia GPS says its offline downloads require login and a subscription; verify the current requirement and map availability in the app before planning around it. Its help page is Does Gaia GPS work offline?
  2. Download more than the trail line. While connected, save a generous area that includes the trail, junctions, trailheads, likely detours, and possible exit routes. Gaia GPS recommends High map resolution for hiking. For Apple devices, Gaia says to keep the app in the foreground and the screen on until downloads finish. See Gaia GPS: Download Maps for Offline Use.
  3. Check the detail you will need. Open the downloaded map and inspect the route at the zoom levels you expect to use. Confirm that the map includes enough terrain and trail detail to identify turns and surrounding features; a broad overview alone may not be useful at a junction.
  4. Test with the internet disconnected. Before the trip, turn on airplane mode, open the mapping app, and confirm that your saved map loads and the tablet can show its position. Gaia GPS explicitly recommends testing downloaded maps in airplane mode: Download Maps for Offline Use. If either the map or position is missing, troubleshoot at home rather than assuming it will work on the trail.

Know what the app’s offline features include

Offline capabilities vary by app, operating system, subscription, map source, and app version. Gaia GPS says offline snap-to-trail routing data is automatically downloaded with offline maps as of Android v2026.3 and iOS v2026.4; its help article was updated May 11, 2026: Gaia GPS: Offline Snap-to-Trail Routing. That version-specific detail should not be assumed for other apps or earlier releases. A saved map also does not, by itself, confirm that every routing or search feature will work offline—test the functions you plan to use.

Keep a paper-and-compass backup

Bring a paper map for the area and a compass, and know how to use them. Gaia GPS’s hiking guidance recommends both: Gaia GPS hiking guidance. Keep the tablet as one navigation tool, not your only one: a dead or damaged battery, blocked satellite reception, or a map that did not download can leave you without its electronic position and display.

Before choosing between a tablet with built-in GPS and one that needs a separate receiver, verify the receiver and app compatibility, offline coverage, map detail and available storage, battery condition on the actual device, and whether you can navigate with a paper map and compass.
