Not safely by guessing. The HP ProLiant ML350 G3 part 292235-001 is a server-specific power-supply backplane, and its 16-pin motherboard-control connector is not established as standard ATX. Power a modern motherboard from a suitable conventional ATX power supply using its required 24-pin and 8-pin CPU connectors. To retain the HP backplane, first obtain a verified schematic or have every power rail and control signal identified by a qualified technician.
What the ML350 G3 16-pin connector is—and what is unknown
HP’s ML350 G3 spare-parts documentation identifies part 292235-001 as the “Power supply backplane board with cover.” The maintenance guide documents removing and replacing that board, but the cited documentation does not provide a verified pin-by-pin electrical map for its 16-pin motherboard-control connector.
The connector description at issue is a dual-power-supply ML350 G3 with a 292235-001 backplane and a 16-pin control jack, being considered for use with a newer motherboard that requires 24-pin ATX main power and 8-pin CPU power. A shared connector shape is not evidence of electrical compatibility: older HP/Compaq connectors may use a Mini-Fit Jr-style housing while assigning signals differently. The referenced connector information also describes a control-polarity difference: proprietary ON/STBY can be active-high, whereas standard ATX PS_ON# is active-low.

Do not plug the HP 16-pin harness into an ATX motherboard socket, or build an adapter based on wire colors, connector shape, or a standard ATX pinout. The available HP documentation does not establish that the 16-pin connector carries the same rails, grounds, standby supply, or control signals in the same positions as ATX. A wrong connection can damage the motherboard, power supplies, or backplane.

Nor does simply bridging or toggling a control pin establish that the rest of the backplane is electrically compatible. Power sequencing, signal polarity, and rail assignments all need to be known before the assembly is connected to replacement hardware.
Choose a power path
| Path | What it requires | Compatibility and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Use a conventional ATX power supply | A PSU with the new motherboard’s required 24-pin ATX and 8-pin CPU connectors | The straightforward path for powering the new board; it does not by itself establish that the HP backplane can be retained. |
| Retain the ML350 G3 backplane | A board-level schematic or verified identification of every relevant rail and control signal, followed by a correctly engineered interface | May preserve the original chassis and drive-bay arrangement, but the cited HP material does not provide the required pin mapping or a conversion procedure. |
| Replace the proprietary power arrangement | Compatible standard ATX components, potentially including a conventional case and PSU | Avoids relying on an undocumented 16-pin interface, but may mean giving up the original chassis or its existing power/backplane arrangement. |
If keeping the original backplane is essential
- Keep the new motherboard disconnected from the HP 16-pin harness. First confirm its power requirements and use a suitable conventional ATX PSU for the board’s 24-pin and 8-pin CPU inputs.
- Obtain a board-level schematic or authoritative pinout for the exact 292235-001 assembly. A general ATX diagram or a pinout for a visually similar HP/Compaq connector is not a substitute.
- Have the interface verified before making an adapter. A qualified electronics technician should identify the rails, grounds, standby supply, and control signals using appropriate controlled, current-limited methods; the available service documentation does not supply these measurements.
- Do not connect the assembly unless every required signal and its behavior are verified. If that mapping cannot be established, replace the proprietary power/backplane arrangement rather than experimenting on the new motherboard.
What HP’s available guidance does not establish
The HP service documentation establishes the identity of the 292235-001 power-supply backplane and describes its removal and replacement. It does not establish an ATX conversion, an official adapter for this 16-pin connector, or a tested procedure for activating the backplane with a replacement motherboard. An HPE community response dated December 23, 2024, likewise did not provide a conversion method and suggested using a motherboard compatible with the server’s power and case. Neither source supplies a verified pin-by-pin mapping.
