No—not as your own tracker. A Samsung phone cannot pair with or manage an Apple AirTag through Apple’s Find My network. Android can help detect an unknown AirTag for unwanted-tracking safety, and an NFC-capable phone can read limited lost-item information from a found AirTag. For tracking your own belongings from a Galaxy phone, use a tracker built for Samsung’s SmartThings Find or Google’s Find Hub instead.

Can you pair an AirTag with a Samsung phone?

No. Apple’s AirTag setup process adds the tag to Find My and links it to an Apple Account; it does not provide a Samsung or Android pairing route. Apple’s AirTag setup instructions describe the Apple process. Installing an app on a Samsung phone does not turn it into an AirTag owner device.

This is different from an Android phone recognizing an AirTag nearby. Android’s unknown-tracker features are intended to help you find a tag that may be traveling with you without your knowledge—not to register, manage, or track your own AirTag.

What a Samsung phone can do with an AirTag

Get an unwanted-tracker alert

Google says unknown-tracker alerts currently support Apple AirTags, along with Find Hub-compatible tags and headphones. If an unknown tracker is detected moving with you, Android can show an alert and let you view a map, play a sound, locate the tag, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to disable it. See Google’s guidance on finding unknown trackers.

An alert is a safety feature, not access to the AirTag’s owner account or ongoing tracking data. If you find a tag and feel unsafe, use the alert’s instructions and follow local safety guidance. Turning off Bluetooth or Location on your phone, or enabling Airplane Mode, does not stop the tag owner from locating the tracker; the tracker itself must be disabled according to its manufacturer’s directions.

Run a manual scan

On supported Android phones, open Settings → Safety & emergency → Unknown tracker alerts → Scan now. Google says a manual scan takes about 10 seconds and checks for trackers that are nearby and separated from their owners. Finding a tag in a manual scan does not by itself prove it has been following you; it could be misplaced or temporarily separated from its owner.

Automated alerts require Location to be on. On Android 11 and later, a manual scan does not require Location; on Android 10 and earlier, it uses Location and Bluetooth. Google says alert data—including location, timestamps, and tracker ID—is temporarily stored in encrypted form on the device and is not shared with Google or other users. Android settings and labels can vary by version and device.

Read limited information from a found AirTag

If you find an AirTag, an NFC-capable Samsung phone may be able to read information from it by holding the phone near the tag. Apple says an Android phone can check whether the owner marked the AirTag as lost; the resulting information may help return the item. This does not pair the tag with your phone or give you ongoing location tracking. Apple explains this in its Personal Safety guide to finding an unwanted tracker.

Which tracker should a Samsung owner choose?

Choose based on the phone and finding network you want to use. An AirTag is managed through Apple Find My, while Samsung’s SmartTag2 uses Samsung’s SmartThings and SmartThings Find path. Google also maintains a list of trackers compatible with Find Hub. These are ecosystem and compatibility distinctions, not a claim that one tracker has better range or performance; the cited official guidance does not establish an independent performance comparison.

Apple AirTag No; Apple’s setup process uses Find My and an Apple Account. Apple Find My for owner setup and management. Android can detect supported unknown AirTags for safety and may read limited lost-mode information through NFC; neither action makes Android the owner device.

Samsung says SmartThings Find is available on supported Samsung phones running Android 9.0 or later that support Find My Mobile. Features can vary by phone and software version. Google’s list shows compatible products, but availability, features, and specifications vary by region, carrier, and device. Check the exact model and local availability on Google’s Find Hub compatibility page.

For a Samsung Galaxy owner who wants to set up and manage a tag through Samsung’s own system, SmartTag2 is a documented option. If you prefer Google’s tracker ecosystem, check Google’s current compatibility list and confirm that the specific tag works with your phone in your region.

Why Android can detect AirTags but cannot use them as its own

Cross-platform detection exists to reduce unwanted tracking, not to make AirTags interchangeable across phone ecosystems. Apple announced in May 2024 that users would receive an “[Item] Found Moving With You” alert when an unknown Bluetooth tracker was seen moving with them over time, regardless of the platform with which the device was paired. Apple’s announcement describes that safety capability. Detecting a tracker, checking a lost-mode message, and managing a tracker as its owner are separate functions.
