Yes—AI can help organize your own notes, summarize documents for your review, or draft questions. But treat anything it generates as an unverified draft, not as an authority on facts, eligibility, forms, or filing requirements. Verify every detail against original records, follow the process for the program and jurisdiction handling your claim, and be cautious about sharing sensitive information.

What AI can—and cannot—do for a claim

For a limited drafting role, an AI tool may help turn your chronology into a clearer outline, create a checklist from official instructions, summarize a document for your own review, or draft questions for the claims office or a representative. These are practical uses, not uses evaluated or endorsed for claimants by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).

DOL’s 2025 AI Strategies describes government applications including document analysis and summarization, extracting information from complex forms, and redacting personally identifiable information. Those agency use cases do not establish that a public chatbot will be accurate or appropriate for preparing an individual claim.

  • Use AI to organize, not establish, facts. Keep original records and check every name, date, work event, symptom, treatment, wage, and requested benefit against them.
  • Do not let it fill gaps. It should not invent missing details, embellish symptoms, or turn uncertainty into certainty.
  • Do not rely on it for legal conclusions. AI cannot determine whether you qualify or replace the official form instructions and submission channel.

Which forms and filing route apply?

Workers’ compensation is specific to the program and jurisdiction. Federal Employees’ Compensation Act (FECA), Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation, and state systems do not share one universal set of forms or procedures. Start with the agency responsible for your claim.

Federal employees covered by FECA

DOL directs federal employees to register for its free web application, ECOMP, and file the form appropriate to the injury. A CA-1 is for a qualifying traumatic injury tied to a specific work event or series during a single day or shift. A CA-2 is for an occupational disease produced by continued or repeated exposure over longer than one workday or shift. Follow the current DOL federal employee claim-filing instructions.

DOL states on that page: “You do not need approval from your supervisor or anyone else at your agency to initiate your FECA workers’ compensation claim.” This statement applies to initiating a FECA claim; it should not be assumed to describe state or other programs.

Longshore and state claims

For Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation claims, DOL provides separate forms and instructions, and claimants can submit case documents electronically through SEAPortal. The agency’s claimant and injured worker page links to program resources, while its document-submission FAQ explains communication and filing details. Do not assume FECA forms apply to Longshore claims or state systems; check the relevant agency’s instructions and deadlines.

How to check an AI-assisted draft

  1. Gather the source records. Use your own notes and relevant original documents as the factual reference; do not treat a generated summary as a replacement for them.
  2. Compare details line by line. Confirm names, dates, work events, symptoms, treatment, wage information, and requested benefits. Correct errors and remove anything unsupported.
  3. Preserve uncertainty accurately. If a date or detail is unclear, keep it marked as uncertain rather than asking AI to guess or write it as settled fact.
  4. Check the official instructions. Confirm the right form, program, deadlines, and submission channel with the agency handling the claim.
  5. Submit through the designated channel. For FECA, DOL directs employees to ECOMP and the applicable CA-1 or CA-2 process. Use the applicable program’s own process for other claims.

Protect medical and identifying information

Claim-preparation material can contain medical details, wages, birth dates, employer information, and claim identifiers. DOL says FECA claim cases are protected under the Privacy Act and explains routine access in its rights of the injured employee guidance. Its Longshore FAQ describes claim-file access and rules around release of information. Texas separately says information in or derived from a workers’ compensation claim file is confidential except as provided by state law, in its claim-file information guidance.

Rank #3

These protections concern agency claim files. They do not establish how a separate consumer AI provider stores or uses prompts. Before using a particular service, check its current terms for retention, model training, deletion, and account controls. Avoid entering unnecessary identifiers or uploading an entire medical or claim file. If you are unsure what information is needed, use a blank template or ask the agency or a qualified representative.

When to contact a person

If your claim is difficult or disputed, consider contacting the responsible agency or a workers’ compensation attorney or authorized representative familiar with the relevant jurisdiction. DOL’s Longshore FAQ recognizes attorneys and authorized representatives among those who may access claim files for claim administration. That does not mean representation is required or that a particular lawyer is appropriate for every case.
