Only in a limited, historical sense. In 2006, some Mac users reportedly used XNJB to see or browse a connected Zune’s music library, but contemporary reports did not establish that they could transfer songs to it. That is not evidence that XNJB works with current macOS versions or every Zune model.
What XNJB could—and could not—do with a Zune
XNJB was a third-party MTP utility, not Microsoft’s Zune desktop software. WIRED reported in November 2006 that XNJB used libmtp and had originally been written for Creative Nomad players. Some users said they could view a Zune’s songs or library through it.
The key limitation was writing to the player. WIRED’s Scott Gilbertson reported, “So far no one has been able to transfer songs though,” attributing the problem to the Zune apparently rejecting transfers from unknown hosts. A contemporaneous Italian report about XNJB 1.4 likewise described limited visibility without the ability to write to the device. These are period reports, not tests of XNJB on a current Mac.
- Reported: limited viewing or browsing of Zune contents by some Mac users in 2006.
- Not established: successful song transfers, dependable two-way synchronization, firmware management, or support across Zune models.
- Not established today: compatibility with current macOS releases or current Mac hardware.
How the Mac options differ
“See the device,” “sync media,” and “use the full Zune experience” are different capabilities. The historical XNJB reports concern the first, not the latter two.

| Option | Purpose and transfer direction | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| XNJB | Third-party MTP utility; reported Zune use was for viewing contents, not writing songs to the player. | WIRED and a contemporaneous Italian report described limited visibility in 2006; neither establishes current Mac compatibility. |
| Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac | Syncs selected media from iTunes and iPhoto to a Windows Phone 7 device. | Microsoft says it is not part of the Zune experience. Microsoft also says DRM-protected content cannot be synchronized. |
| Xune project | A separate project with listed macOS builds for Apple Silicon and Intel. | Its README’s Zune USB-driver setup is under Windows; the macOS build listing does not establish Zune support on Mac. |
Microsoft’s Mac connector was not Zune software
Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac is easy to confuse with a Mac version of the Zune software, but Microsoft explicitly distinguishes them. The connector was intended to sync music, photos, videos, and podcasts from iTunes and iPhoto to Windows Phone 7; it was not the Zune experience. Microsoft’s legacy product information also says that Windows XP or later was needed for the Zune experience on Mac. A Microsoft community answer from 2011 similarly said Zune software was not available for Mac OS X and described the connector as a separate product.
Does Xune provide a current Mac workaround?
The Xune release README lists builds for macOS on both Apple Silicon and Intel. That platform listing alone does not show that the Mac app recognizes Zune players or can transfer to them: the README’s Zune USB-driver instructions are for Windows. It therefore cannot be treated as confirmation of a working Mac-to-Zune transfer solution.

What to expect if you are considering a test
If you already have a Zune and want to experiment, treat XNJB as a historical possibility for viewing contents, not as a dependable syncing tool. The reported transfer failure is central: seeing a library in an application does not show that the device will accept music written from that computer. The 2006 accounts also do not answer whether a particular XNJB build will run on your macOS version or recognize your model.
If your goal is Microsoft’s complete Zune software experience, the cited Microsoft information does not offer a Mac equivalent. The Windows Phone 7 Connector is not a substitute for that experience and does not turn XNJB into a transfer solution.
