Sometimes—but “wet-dry vacuum” describes several kinds of machines, and their approved surfaces and tasks differ. A conventional wet/dry vacuum may pick up dry debris from carpet and collect liquid from hard floors; a wet-dry hard-floor cleaner may wet-clean sealed hard floors but allow only dry pickup on carpet. For hardwood, wet cleaning is appropriate only when the floor’s finish, condition, and care instructions permit it. Check the exact model’s manual and use the specified attachment before cleaning.
First identify what kind of wet-dry vacuum you have
The label alone does not tell you whether a machine can wash carpet or every hard floor. A conventional canister or shop-style wet/dry vacuum collects dry debris and liquid. A wet-dry hard-floor cleaner dispenses cleaning liquid and recovers it with a roller. A carpet spray-extraction cleaner is designed to wash carpet. These are different designs, not interchangeable modes. Kärcher’s SE 4 Select instructions specify carpet and hard-floor accessories, while Dreame’s cordless wet-dry vacuum guidance distinguishes dry carpet pickup from wet cleaning on sealed hard floors.
What can it do on each surface?
Carpet: dry vacuuming is not the same as washing
Use a carpet nozzle or setting for dry debris only if the model’s manual permits it. Kärcher specifies a carpet insert for carpet cleaning on the SE 4 and describes its switchable nozzle positions for dry dirt vacuuming. Dreame says carpet use for its cited cordless wet-dry cleaners is dry pickup only. Neither the “wet-dry” label nor the ability to collect liquid establishes that a machine can wash carpet.

For carpet washing, choose a carpet-capable spray-extraction cleaner and follow the machine and carpet-care instructions. Kärcher’s SE 4 Select instructions, alternate revision describe separate carpet and hard-floor inserts; check the exact model’s instructions for the permitted task and attachment.

Tile: often supported, but verify the model and grout guidance
Some hard-floor cleaners are approved for tile. Hoover’s FloorMate manual lists tile among the non-carpeted surfaces it can wet-clean. That product-specific allowance is not universal: check your machine’s surface list and follow care guidance for the tile and grout. Kärcher specifies its hard-floor insert for dry dirt, hard floors, or water pickup on the SE 4.
Hardwood: wet cleaning depends on the floor
Do not assume every hardwood floor can be wet-cleaned. Hoover’s FloorMate manual directs users to follow the flooring manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations. Only use a machine’s wet mode if your floor’s finish, condition, and care instructions allow it; guidance for one sealed-wood floor does not apply automatically to other finishes or conditions.

How to decide whether your machine is suitable
- Identify the exact model and whether it is a conventional wet/dry vacuum, a wet-dry hard-floor cleaner, or a carpet extractor.
- Check the manual’s surface list and the instructions for the particular mode you plan to use.
- Install the specified nozzle, insert, or floorhead for that surface and task.
- On carpet, determine whether the manual permits dry vacuuming, liquid pickup, or carpet washing; these are separate capabilities.
- Before wet-cleaning hardwood, check the flooring maker’s moisture and cleaning guidance.
- For tile, confirm that both the machine and the tile/grout care instructions allow its moisture and cleaning method.
What to check before buying
Compare the exact models’ approved surfaces for dry pickup and wet cleaning, whether carpet support means dry vacuuming, spill pickup, or washing, and which floorheads or inserts are included. For hardwood, check the floor maker’s guidance as well as the machine manual. If carpet washing is your goal, look for a carpet-capable spray-extraction cleaner rather than relying on the general wet-dry label.
