PokerStars does not recommend using a VPN or proxy server with its services, and the UK terms treat using one to manipulate your location as a serious breach of the rules. PokerStars also warns that these tools can block server connections, poker tables and deposits, so a VPN is not a dependable route to playing. This guide explains what the official guidance says, what to do if you are travelling or have moved, and how to resolve a genuine connection problem.
Can I use a VPN or proxy server with PokerStars?
PokerStars answers this directly on its support page “Using a virtual private network (VPN) or proxy server with PokerStars”: “No, we don’t recommend using a proxy server or a VPN when accessing PokerStars services.”
The same page explains the practical risk. VPN and proxy use can stop parts of the service from working, and PokerStars names three areas: connecting to its servers, joining poker tables, and making deposits.
What the UK terms say about location
PokerStars’ terms vary by site. The UK General Terms, section 10, prohibit circumventing geographic restrictions. Manipulating location information is given as an example of circumvention, specifically “such as by using a VPN.” The terms state: “To do so would be a serious breach of the General Terms and therefore a Prohibited Event.”

The same section lists prohibited jurisdictions, including the United States and certain sanctioned locations. That list applies to the UK terms only. It is not a global map of where PokerStars is available, and other PokerStars sites and local law may differ. Before drawing any conclusion about where you can play, read the General Terms for the PokerStars site where your account is registered.
Playing while you are travelling
PokerStars’ UK travel guidance allows you to keep using your account while travelling, but only where PokerStars services are permitted in the country you are visiting. A VPN does not change that answer. If the service is not permitted at your destination, using one to appear elsewhere is the situation the terms prohibit.

If you are connected without a VPN or proxy and still cannot reach servers, tables or the cashier, PokerStars recommends this sequence:
- Confirm that no VPN or proxy is active on your device or router.
- Contact PokerStars Support and describe the problem, including the time it happened and what you were doing. A screenshot helps.
- Include the client or app log files, which PokerStars recommends when a problem persists.
A lawful way to get started
- Read the General Terms for the PokerStars site where your account is registered, and confirm that the service is permitted where you physically are.
- Download and use the PokerStars software, app or website without a VPN or proxy.
- If you have moved, follow the residency verification steps above.
- If connection or account features fail without a VPN or proxy, contact PokerStars Support with a description, screenshot and logs.
Why this guide does not rank VPNs or give setup steps
A ranked list of VPNs and a configuration walkthrough would be guidance for getting around PokerStars’ location rules. PokerStars discourages VPN use, and its UK terms prohibit using one to evade geographic restrictions, so this guide does not recommend any provider or explain how to configure one for PokerStars. It also does not cover server selection, obfuscation or dedicated IP addresses for disguising location.
