Not always—but Roku needs internet for initial setup, streaming apps and software updates. Wi-Fi is one way to connect; some Roku models also support Ethernet, and a phone hotspot can provide internet over cellular data. After setup, you can use a Roku TV’s HDMI or antenna inputs without internet, but Roku streaming apps will not work offline.

When does a Roku need an internet connection?

During setup

Roku streaming players and Roku TVs prompt you to connect to the internet during setup. Roku says an internet connection is required to complete setup on Roku-branded TVs. For setup steps and model-specific requirements, see Roku’s setup guide and its Roku TV overview.

For streaming and updates

To watch internet-delivered shows and movies, download channels or apps, or receive software updates, the Roku needs internet access. That connection can be Wi-Fi or another supported internet route; a TV connection to an external device does not substitute for internet service.

Can you use Roku without Wi-Fi after setup?

Yes, for limited offline viewing through a connected source. Once setup is complete, a Roku device can display HDMI, cable or over-the-air broadcasts without an internet connection. Roku puts it plainly: “After set-up, you can use your device offline but only for HDMI, cable or over-the-air broadcasts.” See Roku Support’s internet connection guidance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For example, on a Roku TV you can select the HDMI input connected to a game console, Blu-ray player or cable box, or watch antenna channels through Live TV. You cannot use Roku streaming apps or internet services offline.

Ways to connect a Roku to the internet

Connection What it provides What to check
Wi-Fi Internet access through a wireless network. Use a working internet connection and follow the on-screen network setup.
Ethernet Wired internet access on supported Roku models. Ethernet support and USB adapter compatibility vary by model.
Phone hotspot Internet access through your phone’s cellular connection. Check your mobile plan’s data allowance; streaming and updates use cellular data.
HDMI, cable or antenna input Viewing from an external source; it does not connect Roku to the internet. Use the TV’s input selection. This can work offline after Roku setup, but does not enable Roku streaming apps.

Ethernet: verify the exact model first

Ethernet is not available on every Roku player, and adapter compatibility is specific. Roku Support Canada lists Express model 3960, Express 4K model 3940 and Streambar model 9102 for USB Ethernet adapters. Its guidance specifies a 10/100 Mbps adapter—not a 1000 Mbps adapter—with an AX8877X or SMSC95XX chipset and the connector type appropriate to the Roku device. Read Roku’s USB wired-network requirements before buying; regional availability may differ.

To identify your device, open Settings > System > About and note the model number. Then check that it matches Roku’s supported list and the adapter’s connector requirements. An Ethernet adapter gives a compatible Roku a wired route to the network; it does not remove the need for internet to stream or update.

Phone hotspot: internet over cellular data

A mobile hotspot can connect a Roku when home Wi-Fi is unavailable, provided the setup and phone plan support it. The connection uses cellular data, so check your carrier’s allowance before streaming or downloading updates. Roku does not give a universal data-use figure in its cited guidance.

What if you want to use only a Roku TV as a screen?

If your goal is to watch a cable box, game console, Blu-ray player or antenna broadcast, select that device’s HDMI input or the TV’s antenna-based Live TV option. Those external sources can be viewed offline after setup; Roku apps and streaming services still require internet.

Roku says some Roku TVs have an “unlinked mode” for using external inputs without linking a Roku account, but streaming services and Streaming Store apps are unavailable in that mode. It is not a universal setup bypass: availability depends on the TV, and “Connect to the Internet Later” may not appear on every Roku TV system. Check the guide for your specific model before relying on it.

Do you need a different HDMI cable?

Usually, no: Roku recommends using the HDMI cable included with the device. If it is missing or damaged, Roku says a High Speed HDMI cable is appropriate for a TV limited to 720p or 1080p; for 4K Ultra HD or HDR, it recommends Premium High Speed HDMI. See Roku’s setup and cable guidance. A replacement cable affects the connection to the TV, not the Roku’s internet requirements.
