Usually, not without adding and testing the right hardware and software. A DIY Pip-Boy can display a custom interface, maps, or other maker-built features, but a screen and Wi-Fi do not make it a cellular phone, and showing a map does not mean it can locate you. Whether it works for everyday wear depends on the finished enclosure, power, controls, comfort, and durability.
What a DIY Pip-Boy can actually do
“Functional” describes the features implemented in a particular project, not a standard set of capabilities. Documented builds range from prop interfaces to devices with maps, audio, clocks, or environmental readings.

Can a DIY Pip-Boy work as a phone?
A phone can run a Pip-Boy-style simulator in its browser. Pip-Boy.com’s FAQ says its simulators run in a phone browser and that core pages and simulators in its progressive web app work offline after installation. The site describes itself as an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Bethesda Softworks, ZeniMax, or The Wand Company.

It is different from putting a phone inside a wearable shell or building cellular capability into a standalone Pip-Boy. The documented projects here do not verify a Pip-Boy build that can place cellular calls or send texts. A display, Wi-Fi support, or simulator alone is not evidence of those capabilities.

Can a DIY Pip-Boy use GPS or display maps?
Maps and GPS are separate features. The Adafruit build documents displaying OpenStreetMap terrain data, so it can show maps. Its guide does not establish an onboard GPS receiver, live location tracking, or turn-by-turn directions.
Live positioning would be an additional build goal: it needs a compatible location source, software integration, and testing. A map can be displayed without the device knowing where it is; likewise, adding a GPS receiver alone would not demonstrate a working navigation system.

Can you wear one every day?
It may be wearable as a costume prop, but that does not establish that it is practical for daily use. Judge the completed device on its own merits, including:
- Size, weight, heat, and whether the attachment stays secure as you move.
- Battery runtime, charging access, and whether the power setup suits the time you intend to wear it.
- Whether you can use the controls without restricting hand movement or visibility.
- How exposed components, wiring, and the enclosure handle bumps, weather, and ordinary handling.
- Whether the device could damage clothing, furniture, or other objects around you.
Raspberry Pi Official Magazine advises trying the finished build during an ordinary day before wearing it to an event, so you can see how it affects movement and whether it damages the prop or nearby objects. That trial is a practical check, not a guarantee of long-term durability.

How to plan a build around the feature you want
Choose the primary use before selecting parts. The cited Raspberry Pi and ESP32 projects show that different boards and peripherals lead to different feature sets; no single board supplies a finished wearable, phone service, or GPS by itself.
- For a Pip-Boy-style interface or maps: the Adafruit Raspberry Pi project is a documented starting point, with a small display, controls, power, audio parts, wiring, and an enclosure in addition to the computer.
- For a custom prop shell: Raspberry Pi Official Magazine describes an approach using pipe, scrap plastic, and foam, along with a display, buttons, LEDs, a power bank, and wiring.
- For phone functions: decide whether the phone itself will run a simulator or sit inside a wearable shell. Do not treat a standalone prop’s display or Wi-Fi as evidence of cellular service.
- For live GPS: plan for a compatible location source and software integration, then test the result. The cited build guides do not establish a tested receiver for these projects.
For either hardware route, prototype the fit in cardboard or paper, get the computer and custom software working before fitting them into the case, and test during assembly. Confirm current board and display compatibility for the specific design before buying parts.
