Arista’s published guidance does not establish a supported procedure for replacing or expanding the internal flash in a DCS-7050QX-32. Copying a newer, compatible EOS image to flash: is a software upgrade using the storage already in the switch—not a hardware storage upgrade. If you need more physical capacity, confirm a supported option for the exact model and board revision with Arista or a qualified service provider before opening or modifying the switch.
First, identify the exact switch model
Check the complete model identifier before selecting an EOS image or applying lifecycle guidance. Arista’s support notice dated December 10, 2020, says the DCS-7050QX-32 requires the EOS-2GB variant and is not supported on EOS 4.25 or later. The notice says EOS-2GB is available through the EOS 4.24 release train.
That notice distinguishes the 7050QX-32S and 7050QX2-32S as unaffected by this particular restriction. Do not treat those models as interchangeable with the DCS-7050QX-32, or apply a 32S lifecycle notice to the non-S model.

The release boundary above comes from Arista’s 2020 notice; check current vendor guidance for the exact hardware and image you intend to use.

What “upgrade flash storage” can mean
| Approach | What it does | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| EOS image upgrade | Transfers an applicable EOS image to the existing flash: filesystem, updates boot configuration, and activates the image. |
It does not replace or enlarge the physical internal flash. |
| USB recovery | Restores an image and configuration through Arista’s specified recovery process. | It is not a capacity upgrade; the full-recovery process erases internal flash contents. |
| Internal flash or SSD modification | Would be a hardware change. | The reviewed Arista material does not document a supported user retrofit for this model. |
Preparing for an EOS image upgrade
Arista’s Smart System Upgrade guidance is general EOS documentation, not a guarantee that every procedure or image applies to this legacy platform. Confirm compatibility for the DCS-7050QX-32 and its required EOS-2GB variant before proceeding. The live online manual labels itself EOS 4.36.0F, which does not override the model-specific release limitation in Arista’s 2020 notice.
- Back up first. Save the running configuration and a copy of the currently running EOS image somewhere separate from the switch.
- Check available space. Inspect free space on
flash:before transferring anything. Arista recommends room for two copies of the target image plus 240 MB for diagnostics, if available. The 240 MB is a recommendation in Arista’s online upgrade guidance, not a stated minimum for every platform or upgrade. - Transfer the applicable image. Arista documents transfer methods including USB, FTP, SCP, and HTTP. Its USB example is
copy usb1:/EOS-4.14.4.swi flash:/EOS-4.14.4.swi. This copies a file into internal flash; it does not alter physical storage capacity. The example filename is illustrative, not a recommendation to install that EOS release on this switch. - Verify the image. Check the transferred image’s checksum against the value provided for that image before using it.
- Confirm boot configuration and follow the applicable upgrade procedure. Verify the boot configuration points to the intended compatible image before executing the upgrade and reloading. Use the procedure that Arista documents for the exact platform and EOS release.
- Verify after the upgrade. Confirm that the switch boots successfully into the intended image and that its configuration and expected operation are intact.
USB recovery is destructive, not expandable storage
Arista’s full-recovery instructions specify a USB flash drive formatted as MS-DOS or FAT, with the required fullrecover and boot-config files and an EOS image under the expected filename. In that workflow, the contents of internal flash are erased and the files are copied from USB onto it. Treat this as a recovery operation that can remove existing internal contents—not as a way to add capacity. Confirm the procedure applies to the hardware and EOS version before using it.

- Main Ports: 32x 40GbE QSFP+ ports.
- Breakout Support: 24 of the 32 ports can be used as 4x10GbE using breakout cables, allowing for up to 96x 10GbE and 8x 40GbE ports in a single system.
- Management Ports: 1x RJ45 Serial Console, 1x RJ45 100/1000 Management, and 1x USB Type A port.
Does the 7050QX have an SSD or larger flash option?
Arista’s 7050QX family datasheet lists “Up to 4GB Flash” and also mentions an optional built-in SSD for logging and data captures. Those are family-level statements: they do not verify the installed capacity of a particular DCS-7050QX-32, identify a user-installable SSD kit, or provide a retrofit procedure. Do not infer that an SSD can be added to your unit from the datasheet alone.
For a physical storage change, ask Arista or a qualified service provider to confirm support for the exact model, board revision, and service path. If no supported retrofit is confirmed, plan around the existing storage rather than attempting an undocumented hardware modification.
