Yes—many vintage amplifier and receiver lamps can be replaced with LEDs, but there is no universal bulb or kit. First identify what the light does, then match the original lamp’s base and dimensions, circuit voltage, and AC or DC supply. A dial lamp, pilot light, meter lamp and mains-voltage neon switch indicator can require different parts or a different kind of conversion.
Identify the light before choosing an LED
“Amplifier lighting” can refer to several electrically distinct parts. Find the exact model and identify the lamp’s function in its service information before ordering anything.
- Dial or scale illumination: lights the tuning scale or front panel, often through a diffuser or light guide. Beam spread and placement affect whether the whole scale looks even.
- Meter illumination: lights a meter face and may need a particular lamp size or position to avoid hot spots.
- Pilot lamp: indicates that the unit is on. Its socket and circuit may differ from the dial lamps.
- Power-switch indicator: may be a neon lamp connected to a mains-voltage circuit, not a low-voltage bulb. Do not treat it as a drop-in LED replacement.

Match the lamp’s base, voltage and supply
Before buying, compare the original lamp and circuit against the replacement’s specifications. A familiar-looking base does not prove that a bulb is electrically compatible.

- Base and size: Check the socket type, bulb dimensions and available clearance behind the faceplate or meter.
- Rated voltage: Match the lamp to the voltage actually supplied by its circuit, not a voltage assumed from the amplifier’s model or mains input.
- AC or DC: Verify whether the lamp circuit supplies alternating or direct current, and whether the candidate LED is rated for that type.
- Circuit role: Determine whether the original lamp, resistor or other component is part of a larger circuit. Replacing a component without understanding its role can change circuit behavior.
- Brightness and appearance: Consider color, beam spread, dimming behavior and how the light will look alongside any lamps you are keeping.
For example, Fender Amp Parts lists a T-3-1/4 bayonet LED pilot lamp rated for 6.3 V AC/DC as a replacement for #47/P-47-style lamps. That is a specific product example—not a universal vintage-audio specification. Use it only if the original lamp, socket and circuit match: Fender Amp Parts’ #47 pilot lamp listing.
Choose between a drop-in lamp and a circuit conversion

AkitikA’s Blue Light instructions cover an LED-board conversion for the original orange NE-2 power-switch lamp in the Dynaco Stereo 120, SCA-80 and PAT-4. The manual describes the original neon lamp and dropping resistor as compatible with 120 VAC; that model-specific circuit is not a general wiring recipe for other amplifiers: AkitikA Blue Light assembly manual.

For a different use case, a dedicated LED board is listed for the Dynaco FM3 tuner dial light. It is for that tuner’s dial, not a generic amplifier indicator conversion: Vintage Audio Restoration Kits’ FM3 Dial LED page. Do not transfer a resistor value or wiring arrangement from one model’s kit to another; the correct design depends on the circuit and LED.
Plan for a different look from incandescent lighting
An LED can change more than the lamp’s color. Its beam pattern, position and interaction with a diffuser affect how evenly a dial or meter is illuminated. A repair article describes an LED retrofit that looked brighter than adjacent filament bulbs, but gives no quantified comparison; it is an observation, not a result that predicts every installation: Orangevalley Systems’ vintage receiver bulb replacement article.

If several lamps illuminate one scale, replacing only some can make brightness or color inconsistent. Check whether the LEDs are dimmable if the original lamps dim, and consider whether a warmer or cooler color will suit the existing diffuser and display. Do not assume an LED will reproduce the original glow, save a particular amount of power, run a fixed number of hours or lower temperature by a predictable amount; those outcomes depend on the specific lamp and circuit, and no general comparative figures are established here.

Unplug the unit before opening it or changing an internal lamp, and do not assume that unplugging immediately makes internal components safe. AkitikA’s assembly manual warns, “Large capacitors hold lots of energy for a long time,” and says, “Always unplug the power before working on the amplifier.” These warnings matter especially around power supplies and mains-voltage indicator circuits.

Before disassembly, photograph the original lamp, socket, wiring and orientation, and record the model and lamp markings. That documentation can help with reassembly, but it does not make hazardous chassis work safe.

If access involves mains wiring, a high-voltage supply or capacitors that may remain charged—or if you are not experienced working inside electronic equipment—have a qualified technician identify and install the replacement. Do not probe a live chassis to determine a lamp’s supply.
