Possibly—but an unpaid Sprint iPhone installment can keep the device from meeting T-Mobile’s unlock requirements. T-Mobile also treats a past-due postpaid account balance as a separate reason it may not process an unlock. Ask T-Mobile to check the phone’s IMEI, financing payoff status, and account standing before paying or switching carriers. Even after an unlock, the iPhone must still be compatible with the network you want to use.
What kind of balance do you owe?
There are two different issues to identify: the remaining installments on the iPhone and any past-due balance on the service account. They are not interchangeable, and resolving one does not necessarily resolve the other. Ask T-Mobile which specific condition is affecting the unlock request and what amount, if any, must be paid to satisfy the device-financing requirement. T-Mobile’s device unlock guidance and account-status guidance address these separately.
How to request an unlock now that Sprint is part of T-Mobile
- Find the iPhone’s IMEI. On the iPhone, open Settings > General > About and note the IMEI. Give it to T-Mobile support so the carrier can check the specific device.
- Ask T-Mobile to review both records. Request confirmation of the remaining device-financing payoff, whether the account is past due, and which requirement is preventing an unlock.
- Request the carrier unlock when eligible. Ask support to submit the unlock request and keep its reference number and any explanation of a denial or delay. Under the CTIA Consumer Code, participating carriers should unlock eligible devices, initiate an unlock request with the device manufacturer, explain why a device is ineligible, or explain a reasonable delay within two business days.
Do not assume that paying the device installments automatically clears a past-due service balance, or that bringing the service account current satisfies every device-unlock condition. Have T-Mobile confirm the outcome for this iPhone and account.
What Sprint-specific details should you check?
T-Mobile’s Sprint device support information notes that certain GSM-capable devices sold by Sprint may have a Sprint SIM lock. It also distinguishes international GSM use from domestic U.S. SIM use. This is legacy guidance, so ask T-Mobile to verify how it applies to the exact iPhone, IMEI, and account rather than relying on an old Sprint instruction.

Will an unlocked Sprint iPhone work on another carrier?
Not necessarily. Unlocking removes software that blocks an attempt to activate a device on another carrier; it does not add network bands or guarantee that the phone supports every service. The CTIA Consumer Code explicitly warns that an unlocked device may not be technologically compatible with another network or may not provide all services. Before switching, give the prospective carrier the exact iPhone model and IMEI and ask it to confirm compatibility, including voice, messaging, and data.
Could a carrier switch offer pay off the Sprint balance?
Do not count on a switch promotion to settle an old Sprint balance without checking its written terms. T-Mobile’s Family Freedom offer describes conditional reimbursement and requires qualifying steps such as an eligible postpaid port-in, trading in the financed phone, financing a new phone, providing documentation, and meeting a minimum payment-plan history. The reviewed list of eligible carriers does not name Sprint.

What to do before paying or changing carriers
- Ask T-Mobile whether the issue is unpaid device financing, a past-due service balance, or both.
- Get the specific payoff amount and unlock requirement from the carrier before making a payment based on an assumption.
- Request an unlock through T-Mobile once the device meets its eligibility conditions, and keep the request reference.
- Confirm exact-model and IMEI compatibility with the destination carrier before ending current service.
- Review any reimbursement offer separately; verify eligibility and every required trade-in, financing, payment, and documentation step.
