Possibly—but Samsung’s Galaxy Upcycling at Home and a Jellyfin server are different projects. Upcycling at Home uses eligible phones as SmartThings sensors; Jellyfin serves your media library to compatible clients. An old Galaxy may suit a narrow, direct-play setup, but the available documentation does not establish that any particular phone can run Jellyfin reliably or transcode your files.
Samsung Upcycling at Home is not Jellyfin hosting
Samsung announced Galaxy Upcycling at Home on April 21, 2021, as a SmartThings Labs feature that repurposed a phone’s sensors. Examples included detecting sounds such as a baby crying, dog barking, cat meowing, or a knock, and using light levels for automation. Samsung’s announcement named S, Note, and Z series phones released from 2018, including the S9 and Note9, running Android 9 or later. It also cautioned that availability could vary by carrier. Those are historical eligibility terms, not a guarantee that the feature is available now for every device, market, account, or app version. Samsung’s 2021 announcement explains the original feature, and Samsung’s 2025 US sustainability toolkit still describes using phones as sound and illumination sensors and notification senders through SmartThings.
Jellyfin has a different purpose: it is media-server software that makes a library available to clients. It is not the Samsung Upcycling feature, and Samsung’s published Upcycling eligibility does not establish that a Galaxy can run a Jellyfin server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat determines whether a Galaxy can serve your library?
Direct play versus transcoding
If a playback client can handle a file’s format, it may play the source directly, avoiding a demanding server-side conversion. If the client cannot play the media, Jellyfin may convert it for playback. That conversion—transcoding—can place much heavier demands on the server, particularly for HDR-to-SDR tone mapping. The exact behavior depends on the media and client; Jellyfin’s documentation does not establish that an unspecified Galaxy can transcode a particular library. See Jellyfin’s client documentation and hardware guidance.

- YOUR CONTENT, SUPER SMOOTH: The ultra-clear 6.7" FHD+ Super AMOLED display of Galaxy A17 5G helps bring your content to life, whether you're scrolling through recipes or video chatting with loved ones.¹
- LIVE FAST. CHARGE FASTER: Focus more on the moment and less on your battery percentage with Galaxy A17 5G. Super Fast Charging powers up your battery so you can get back to life sooner.²
- MEMORIES MADE PICTURE PERFECT: Capture every angle in stunning clarity, from wide family photos to close-ups of friends, with the triple-lens camera on Galaxy A17 5G.
- NEED MORE STORAGE? WE HAVE YOU COVERED: With an improved 2TB of expandable storage, Galaxy A17 5G makes it easy to keep cherished photos, videos and important files readily accessible whenever you need them.³
- BUILT TO LAST: With an improved IP54 rating, Galaxy A17 5G is even more durable than before.⁴ It’s built to resist splashes and dust and comes with a stronger yet slimmer Gorilla Glass Victus front and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer back.
That makes a phone most plausible as an experiment for a limited setup where the client can directly play the files. Do not assume it will handle conversions, multiple simultaneous viewers, or a particular codec without checking the device and testing your actual media.
Phone capability versus Jellyfin’s general server guidance
Jellyfin recommends 8 GB of system RAM, a 100 GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files and transcoding cache, and gigabit Ethernet or faster for an average deployment. These are general recommendations for conventional server hardware—not minimum requirements, a phone compatibility list, or a performance test of Galaxy models. Jellyfin also says Wi-Fi is not recommended for optimal server networking and warns that transcoding is demanding. A phone may fall short of the recommended setup, but those recommendations alone do not prove it cannot serve a small direct-play library.

Plan storage and networking around the actual phone
Where the media and server files live
Jellyfin distinguishes media storage from the server’s own files: media can be stored on a location with sequential throughput above the media bitrate, including a network share, while its server files benefit from random-access storage and the project recommends an SSD. The storage guidance is at Jellyfin’s storage page.
For a Galaxy, external storage is only a possibility after you verify the exact phone’s connector, USB OTG support, drive format, and power needs. Samsung explains the general OTG connection process in its Galaxy connection-options guidance; it does not guarantee every drive or adapter will work with every phone. A powered hub may be needed if the phone cannot supply enough power, but compatibility must be checked for the specific devices.

Wi-Fi or wired connection
Jellyfin prefers gigabit Ethernet for optimal server networking and does not recommend Wi-Fi for that goal. Whether a given Galaxy can use a wired connection depends on its hardware and compatible accessories; the documentation does not verify a setup for an unnamed model. If you use Wi-Fi, treat network conditions as another possible constraint rather than assuming the server’s performance reflects only its processor.

| Path | Purpose | What it depends on | What the available documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Upcycling at Home | SmartThings sound and illumination sensing, with notifications and automation | Samsung feature availability, compatible device and software, and SmartThings setup | Samsung’s April 2021 announcement described S, Note, and Z phones from 2018 onward running Android 9 or later, subject to availability caveats; it is not a current universal compatibility guarantee. |
| Galaxy running a Jellyfin server | Serving a media library to playback clients | Server software, storage, network, phone capability, and whether clients can directly play the files | Jellyfin’s general server and storage guidance describes conventional deployments; it does not confirm compatibility or performance for a particular Galaxy. |
Choose Upcycling if the goal is a Samsung-supported SmartThings sensor use and the feature is available for your phone. Consider Jellyfin as a separate experiment if you want to serve media and can accept that the installation method, compatibility, and performance depend on your exact phone and configuration.

What to verify before relying on a phone server
- Identify the Galaxy model and Android version, then confirm whether a suitable Jellyfin server installation method exists for that device. The sources here do not specify one.
- Check that the client devices can directly play the formats in your library. If they require transcoding, do not assume the phone can keep up.
- Confirm where the library and Jellyfin’s server files will be stored, including drive format, OTG support, power needs, and connection speed.
- Check how the phone can connect to your network and whether Wi-Fi or a compatible wired accessory meets your needs.
- Test with your own files and clients before depending on the setup. No model-specific stream count, reliability, or power-use result is established here.
