No—not from any direct indicator Slack documents. Slack describes muting as a way to manage notifications and sidebar display for the person who mutes a channel or direct message (DM). Its documentation does not describe an alert or profile signal telling the other person they were muted. That conclusion reflects Slack’s published guidance, not a claim about undocumented systems or every workspace configuration.

What muting a Slack conversation does

Slack says you can mute a specific channel or DM if you do not want notifications for that conversation. The setting applies to that conversation: muting a DM does not silence messages from the same people in other conversations. It does not erase the conversation or remove either person from it. Slack’s Help Center explains how muting works.

A muted conversation may be hidden from the muting member’s sidebar, although that person can choose to show muted conversations. Muting also does not necessarily make the conversation visually disappear from that member’s Slack: numbered badges can still appear for a mention or a DM, and Threads can appear bold when someone replies to a message that member sent in a muted conversation. These are cues for the person who muted the conversation, not documented alerts to the other participant.

Mute is different from other Slack notification settings

Setting Scope and effect What Slack documents that others can see
Mute a channel or DM Controls notifications for that conversation; it may also hide it from the muting member’s sidebar. Slack’s mute guidance does not document a direct signal to the other participant. Source
Conversation-specific notifications Sets preferences for a channel or group DM, such as all new posts or mentions only. Slack describes these as personal preferences and does not identify a mute-like alert to others. Source
Pause notifications Pauses notifications more broadly until they are resumed or the selected period ends. Slack says other people see a snooze icon next to the member’s name. That indicates paused notifications, not that a particular conversation was muted. Source
Availability and status Availability shows whether someone is active or away; status is a message or emoji. These are profile signals, not documented indicators that someone muted a conversation. Source

What you can—and can’t—infer from someone’s response

  • No reply or a delayed reply does not prove you were muted. Slack’s documented mute controls affect the other member’s notifications and sidebar; messages remain in the conversation.
  • A snooze icon is not proof of a mute. It indicates that the person has paused notifications, which is a separate setting.
  • There is no documented direct test. Slack’s reviewed guidance does not describe a notification or profile indicator sent to someone when another member mutes their conversation.
  • Ask directly if you need clarity. You could ask whether the person saw your message or whether another communication channel would work better. Avoid treating response timing as evidence.

How to manage your own mute and notification settings

Mute or unmute a channel or DM

Open the conversation and use its notification controls. Slack provides separate desktop and mobile instructions, and the exact labels or steps can vary by app version. For a one-to-one DM, Slack’s desktop instructions describe muting through the relevant conversation control; group DMs offer a mute option. Follow Slack’s current mute instructions for your device.

Review notification preferences for a conversation

On desktop, Slack directs users to Preferences → Notifications → Exceptions to the defaults. On mobile, open Notifications, then Channels or Direct messages. These controls let you review conversation-specific preferences, including muted conversations, and adjust or reset them. See Slack’s instructions for managing notifications by conversation.
